with a license plate number you can buy information of the owner. for security purposes. a lot of ppl get/like difficult or random numbers and letters on their plate so it wont be easy to memorize so if in case they get away from cops, they wont have the number by just a glance.

Many reasons, but mostly for privacy and security. You'd be amazed at what you can dig up on the internet these days wink

I got just a regular license plate so it woul be harder top remember. Example its harder to remember 625MTY than if you got MY CELI or something. And avoiding cops is not hard. Its nothing to brag about but i have avoided many cops. Granted none of them were actually behind me or had there lights on yet. But if you see a cop and you think he caught you speeding or something just get off the next exit on a highway or pull onto a side street on regular roads.

im sure you could dig up more info on a random plate than what you could possably ever find on a vanity plate - too many other simular words on a vanity plate make it harder to find... although, if you have a generic plate, your random letter are easier to pin-point spineyes

BTW - Im sure that someone from new york is going to locate a california license plate, then fly to california just to jack an economy car (the toyota celica). They may have better fortunes stealing a car that is actualy worth something rofl

...

Car thieves' top 10 targets
The gigantic Cadillac Escalade is the preferred ride of athletes and celebrities -- and of criminals, too. It's stolen at the highest rate of any vehicle in the U.S.

The Cadillac Escalade, a chrome-bedecked sport-utility vehicle that weighs as much as two Honda Civics, gets 12 mpg and costs $51,000, has the highest theft rate of all 2000-2002 passenger vehicles, an insurance industry group says.

The Highway Loss Data Institute (HLDI) says the Escalade is stolen at a rate four times higher than average. In addition, the big truck also tops the list on the dollar value of losses to theft, costing insurers $167 for every Escalade on the road. The average for all cars is $15.

"The Escalade has both the highest theft claim frequency and the worst overall theft losses -- 10 times the average for all vehicles -- indicating it's a top target for thieves," says Kim Hazelbaker, HLDI senior vice president. "The Escalade's theft losses are the highest even though it's equipped with a standard antitheft ignition immobilizer. These immobilizers have reduced thefts of other vehicles, but we don't know why they don't seem to be effective for the Escalade."

Five other sport-utilities made the list of top theft targets, including the Escalade's equally flashy rival, the Lincoln Navigator. The car stolen at the highest rate was the Dodge Stratus.

The car you buy makes a huge difference in how much you pay for insurance. For instance, in San Diego, according to the California Department of Insurance, a 25-year-old male can get liability and collision auto insurance on a midsize sedan for about $2,000. For the same male, the average annual insurance bill for an SUV such as a Mitsubishi Montero Sport increases to $2,800, or 40% higher.

HLDI says its results are the only reported theft results based on the number of insured vehicles. Other studies don't take into account how many of each vehicle are insured, so the most popular vehicles on the road tend to top these organizations' lists of most-stolen vehicles (which are typically topped by the Honda Accord and Toyota Camry, the two most popular autos on the market). In contrast, HLDI identifies vehicles with the worst theft losses by counting the number of claims by make and model relative to the number of each make and model insured, indicating which vehicles are more likely to be targets.

Through July 2003, Cadillac had sold about 30,000 Escalades. By contrast, Honda sold eight times as many Accords.

HLDI is an affiliate of the Insurance Institute for Highway Safety, which is funded by insurers.

this technique works well WITH or WITHOUT an vanity plate... I havent got a traffic ticket since 2001 - but if I had not gotten off the freeway those few time last weekend while heading to SanDiego, I would have surely gotten a ticket

What are the top 10 auto theft areas in the United States?

Metropolitan areas in or near ports and the Canadian and Mexican border are among the top 10 auto theft areas in the United States, according to a study by the National Insurance Crime Bureau (NICB(R)). The NICB's study analyzed vehicle theft rates of metropolitan statistical areas (MSA's) in the United States in 2001 using vehicle theft data from the FBI, department of motor vehicles and state police departments, and registered vehicle data from R.L. Polk. The vehicle theft rate was determined by dividing the number of stolen vehicles by the number of registered vehicles.

The MSA's with the ten highest vehicle theft rates are: Phoenix, AZ
Miami, FL
Fresno, CA
Detroit, MI
Sacramento, CA
Tucson, AZ
Tacoma, WA
Stockton, CA
Seattle, WA
Jersey City, NJ

oh wow...
but isn't it pointless for some to scratch out the license plates and yet display their individualised stickers then?

^^ Luckily, the celica is not a very often stolen car, comparatively speaking.

It's times like these that I'm glad I park in a locked garage. grin
