Well, I was driving Saturday night, to go out to eat with my girlfriend, and long story short, I had been in 2nd gear for at least ten seconds before I caught a hole in the traffic, and hit like 3/4 throttle while still in 2nd, and my RPM's shot up to like 5,000. Hmmm, ok. So I shifted to 3rd, and slowly applied gas while releasing the clutch at the same time, and pretty much the same thing happened. RPM's shot right back up. But it was weird because I was on a little bit of a hill, and I still managed to climb ever so slowly, so I knew that I was getting a little power to the drivetrain, while my RPMs were close to 5k.
So, I pulled over into a parking lot, and put it in neutral and gave it a few minutes. I didn't smell the clutch at all, but I knew that it was the culprit.
Anyways, I decide to pull back onto the street, and everything seems fine, although it's about this time that I begin to smell the clutch. It smelled like someone took a flame thrower to it. puke

Well, the next day, I notice that when I shift above 4,000 RPMs, when I land in the next gear, the RPMs go up more than usual, and fall back down once the clutch catches. So, now I have to shift at about 3,500 RPM in order for the clutch to grip, and if I'm in gear, the clutch slips when a moderate amount of throttle is applied.

So, now I have to shift at 3,500 RPM, and even if I am fully engaged in a gear, I can't give it a lot of throttle.

Well, the question I have for you guys is...Is my clutch the only thing gone bad, or could there be any other reason for these problems? The reason I ask is because my warranty expires in like 1,000 more miles, and if there is another problem besides the clutch, I would like to have it fixed while it's still under warranty. I assume that it's entirely the clutch, but let me know if anything else could cause this.

Also, how many PSI's should my new clutch hold? How much is optimal, and how much is overkill? I want something that could be used for daily driving, and something that I could use for racing every now and then. Anyone recommed a good after market clutch?

Also, while the mechanic is in there, I'm going to have him swap out the stock flywheel with a new Fidenza flywheel. Any problems anyone can see with this?

Please give me your opinions. Thanks. thumbsup

the only problem with the new flywheel is that your revs will shoot up faster, but they also drop faster, making it harder to stay in lift.

it is most probably your clutch.

but sometimes if gears are worn badly (which i doubt cause 7th gen celicas are still relatively new) gears will slip a second or two before they catch, regardless of your clutch condition.

symptoms of a bad clutch.
if you're looking for aftermarket clutches, go with an ACT street clutch or RPS Street clutch, also the fidanza is a good choice, and also the rps lightweight flywheel is good too (and rebuildable if needed)

oh yea, i forgot to mention that clutches aren't covered under your warranty due to wear.

It sounds like a bad clutch to me. If you go aftermarket go with ACT street or even 4-puck and fidanza flywheel.

but you will get to lift faster too...

act is out of the question if you want toyota to replace it for you... but, you may want to ask them if you can get a TRD clutch for a little more money, would be worth it IMO.

good luck, keep us updated.

I know they aren't covered under warranty, but I wanted to make sure that it was just the clutch acting up, and not something else that may be covered.

Well, I don't believe that it has anything to do with the gears, because it does this in all gears, and even if I'm engaged fully in a gear and I give it too much gas, the clutch will slip.

Also, I have never had any issues with the clutch before, no slips or anything to notify me that the clutch was in a poor condition, it just kinda hit me with full force.

Are all ACT street discs rated at the same PSI, or are they different? The reason I ask is because I want a good clutch with holding power that would be greater than the factory clutch, but I don't want a clutch that is too powerful for my own good.

Does anyone know what the factory clutch is rated at (pounds per square inches), and how many PSI's would be optimal for my new clutch?

you'd have to search around websites... but i know that the rps max street clutch is capable of 330 ft. pounds of torque, and we all know the celica doesn't have that much rolleyes

Hopefully I can get my girlfriend's dad to install it all for me. If not I may have to have a dealership do it.

Will a dealership even install aftermarket parts, or do they require you to buy the parts from them?

Got some quotes today for the clutch and install...

One place wants about $180 for the clutch and $900 for the labor. For the TRD clutch, they want $399.

They also told me that they don't recommend the TRD clutch because it wears faster? Is that true?

ACT all the way. I wouldnt recomend a pucked disc just go with the street. ACT's you wont need more then the stage two depending on how much torque you are pushing. Real quality clutch and decent for everyday driving.

Sounds like your clutch is SHOT! I had the same problem, and of course it's not covered under warranty. So, like U, I went with an aftermarket clutch (Exedy to B exact). Got the clutch and pressure plate combo. I've had in my car since Sept and I LOVE IT! Catches the gears much faster. Takes a while to break in because of the pressure plate, but man ur shifts will be much faster without the worry of overkill as much. So, as for my opinion, I say go with Exedy. Here's my post of when I first installed the clutch: https://celicahobby.com/ubbthrea...true#Post204365
Good luck thumbsup

I believe the ACT street disc is rated at 228 ft lbs and the 4-puck is rated at 232 I THINK but I'm not sure I'll double check.

Thanks for the suggestion guys. I'm going to most likely buy a TRD clutch kit, and a Fidenza flywheel. My girlfriend's dad is going to install both, so I will save a lot of money! Also, I'll tell him to keep the factory clutch and flywheel and I will post pics of them both.

Can anyone confirm the rumor that the TRD clutch will wear faster than the factory one? A dealership told me this. confused

I don't know why they would say that either. Perhaps because it applies more pressure than the stock one?

The after market clutch last just as long or longer than factory clutch the dealership told you that so you would buy their expensive ass clutch (trust me I used to work at one) and no do not use your old throwout bearing get a new one. I know ACT clutch kits come with one. Also get the alignment tool very hard to put in tranny with out this. It also comes with ACT kit.

Well, they told me to go with the factory clutch, and not the more expensive TRD clutch. It's a difference of like 200 dollars.
