i start with the whole story. my buddy told me there is a recall on the detent ball for the celica and i should go to a dealer and ask them about it. i went and they said that since there was nothing on my car that it had already been done. so i was shifting at redline tonight when i miss shifted from 3rd 2nd. i've had the car a year and its the first time i miss shifted:( and well half a second later my foot was on the clutch and it was out of second. i was like "!@#$" to be exact. and now my car idles rough. the car is at 38K to just out of warranty...i don't know if i dropped a valve or if i skipped on the timing chain or what. im clueless to what to do. im a poor college student that was just looking to have some fun:( anyone have any info on the recall or what happens when miss shifting like that?

are there any other problems besides idling rough? case in point: drive your car in all gears up to redline (except 6th obviously...unless you have a Turbo/supercharger/nos you can't even hit lift in 6th..and obviously watch out because you'll be able to go around 130-140 mph), see if anything feels differently.

a 3-2 shift, even at redline, shouldnt cause any obvious damage--although it's not healthy for your engine/tranny) it may just be your imagination that something 'is definately wrong' and therefore it 'feels wrong' even when there may not be an actual problem.

get a tune-up, see if this helps the rough idling. if the rough idling persists--take it to a bodyshop/dealer and see if there was any actual damage.

my OPINION: i doubt a 3-2 shift did much, but i could be wrong. at least you didnt do a 6-2 (don't ask) rofl

if the dealer wants to be cool, they'll repair your tranny/engine for free or at a minimal price. but since it's your fault that the car is messed up, don't count on getting it replaced for free.

I think he means he went from redline 3rd to 2nd instead of 4th right? That CANNOT be good for an engine. I was in my buddy's GTS when that happened.

He ended up bending several valves and had the dealer put almost an entire new engine in. Dealer estimated about $12,000 Canadian (waranty thank god). But I'm sure they overdid it on the estimate to make is sound worse since it was udner warranty!!

Sorry but it sounds like you might have the same thing. That is exactly what happened to him. rough idle etc...

thumbsdown cry

Good luck with that

A 3-2 shift at redline can still bend some valves. I recommend not driving it too hard for at least a week or so, and see if the rough idle isn't just your imagination or something that has nothing to do with your mis-shift.

Driving the engine hard at this point (if he does in face have bent valves) could spell disaster for the entire engine.

me thinks the valve is bent ...

good news is that valves are cheap, bad news is that you probably have no clue on how to DIY and it'll cost about 500 bucks to swap out the bent one, while your at it you might as well install new valves on all cylenders.

I did the same thing,..i was going about 90 pushing 3rd to 8200 and went to put it into 4th and dopped it into 2nd. My CEL went on immeadiatley. and i pulled over and stalled out. Had to be towed. Luckily you're shit didnt blow right there. Hopefully you didnt mess up your engine as bad as i did. I needed a whole new head and block...nothing could save it.

Mabey its just me but on my GT. It wont let me go back into a lower gear unless you realy force ir. First it will give a groan and a grind and you can fill it forcing you not to go into that gear. U guys must really force it to make it do that. Unless the GTS is that diffrent confused

nah its not synchros cause i had that problem on my old car. thats when you grind sometimes shifting into gears. synchros kind of guide the gears for say. its def engine since it won't hold idle, some power loss i think but that coulda been me freaking out. umm my guess is the valves. but i hope not anything else:( im too poor to fix whole block.

I just installed new valves on all my cylinders took about 2 hrs cus i'm not much of a DIY guy, but it definately did help after i did a bad shift like you, but mine was pretty much purposefully, i had to avoid a merging 18 wheeler who didn't see me coming at 110mph so i downshifted when i was about to shift into 5th and wow, not a very nice sound but i saved my ass, and it didn't cost much for new valves, just a pain in the ass to replace. you can get a DIY guide on how to replace them @ most toyota dealerships...that is if you know a mechanic at one who can steal one for you wink

most cars have safety locks which keep you from going into 1st (low gear) and reverse because that can destroy a transmission

i went from 3rd to 2nd once in my 95 celi st 5 speed and it didn't do any harm, it scared the shit out of me but that was a month ago and i haven't had any problems or anything feeling different, and a mechanic shop can usually do a diagnosis for cheap to see if something is wrong
