Took of my cylinder head cover to fix the lift bolts, and when I went to put it back on, it wouldn't go on due to the fact that the oil pipe in the rear right hand corner of the thing is bent.

Somehow, right after the O-Ring, the tip got bent to one side. I tried to hammer it back in...nothing.

Tried to pry it back in...nothing.

Toyota says that I will have to buy a whole new cylinder head cover which will cost me around $300 all because they don't sell this part seperately.

Anyone see anyway around this???

Picture of what I mean...The tip is not straight causing it to collide with the female hole that it is supposed to fit into. Hammering it has not put the tip back into the pipe, and even heating it up didn't help.

is there a way to slide the pipe into the female part and put pressure on it to close it down?

maybe it's bent for a reason?

I have no idea. I think it might have been because I pulled it off at an angle to try and get around the spark plug wires.

I didn't pull too hard, so I figured that it could be easily reversed, but I was wrong.

The damn thing won't budge one bit. I pretty much gave up on it so I started rapping on it with a hammer, and that didn't help.

I even heated up the bottom part to try and see if it would expand ever so slightly so I could hammer it in and nothing.

It's connected to a little pipe that goes around the whole lid of the cylinder head cover and sprays the valves and cams with oil. Toyota doesn't sell that part seperately (big suprise) so they said that I would have to buy a whole new cover.

The guy gave me a "deal" on it and sold it to me for $260, but it won't be in for a few days so I was just gonna fuck with this thing because if it can't be fixed, then it's trash.

I'm sure that a shop might be able to rig the god damn thing up somehow, and bend it back, but I don't know anyone that could do it. I'm positive that it can be fixed with the right tools, because it's not that big of a problem, I just don't have the tools or the know-how.

Mind you, it's just the tip that is bent, and it appears to be a seperate piece from the rest of the pipe, hence the O-Ring. I'm sure that someone could just hack it off, bore out the pipe of any jagged pieces, and weld the damn thing back on, or find a way to pop it back on.

what I mean is maybe the pipe is bent for a reason, so it applies pressure when it's closed...

If it came off with resistance, maybe it goes in with resistance?

This is why I don't touch my engine rofl

I asked Lucky if it should be bent, and we both think that it shouldn't be. I tried applying force to it, but it seems to be scraping metal off of the female part. I also inspected the female part, and it doesn't appear to be at any angle, so I'm almost positive that the tip is fucked up. I just don't see how a little bit of pressure could have messed the tip up so badly to the point where a hammer's force couldn't fix it.

On another note, I'm having my GF pick it up and show it to her dad tonight. He is the guy that put my clutch in, and he works on exotics and luxury cars, and his son is a machineist (sp), so perhaps he has the know-how to fix it, cause I sure as hell don't.

I think the reason it was so hard to pull off is because the seal had never been broken, and everything was pretty much in place. Might have also had something to do with the stiff pipe going into the front left of the head cover that I couldn't remove, so I had to pull the cover off back and to the left in order to get it off.

I asked the guy in the Toyota parts department if a mechanic could just look at it, because I'm sure that with their tools and experience, they could have just bent it back or rigged it up somehow. He told me that "they don't do that," meaning that they either don't know how, or they just want to make money off of me buying a whole new part.

True.

My girlfriend's dad is going to try and fix it, so if he can't then I guess I'm stuck paying for a whole new cover.

Ok, my GF's dad is fixing it as we speak, and he says that he can most likely straighten it. He said that the reason it bent like that is because I worked on the engine while it was still hot, which made the metal somewhat flexible. Before the damage could be reversed, it was already the next day, and everything was as cool as a cucumber.

Lesson learned: Don't fix things when they are hot.

Anyways, the only reason that he was reluctant to fix it is because he said that it could possible spray oil if it is not aligned correctly. Mind you, the pipe transfers oil to the cylinder head and sprays it on the valves/cams to lube them.

Should I give it a shot, or buy a new cover?

A new cover is $300, so I would rather try this out, but are there any serious risks? I figure that if it does spray oil, then fine, at least it sprays it where it is already going anyways.

Are there sensors in under the cylinder head cover that can sense if there is a dramatic increase in the temp up there?

I don't wanna blow my valves and cams before a CEL comes on. rofl

I just don't see why it would be a problem. As long as the pipe stays the same length, and there are no holes in it, it should be fine, right?

Also, does the O-Ring close the gap in the pipe between the tip and the rest of the pipe, or does it form a seal in the female end (where the pipe fits into)? confused

Titties!

My GF is bringing it over to me now at work. She said that he fixed it. I'm gonna put it on and see if it fits later tonight.

One question though. Is there any way that I can see if oil is being sprayed on the valves/cams after I install it, without taking the cylinder head back off?

I got it back from him, and it looks great.

He suggested that before I put it back on, I grease up the pipe with a thick automotive grease in order to get a nice and secure fit. He said the grease would also help if there happened to be a leak.

What kind of grease should I use? Only grease/oil I have at home is WD-40 (not thick enough) and white lithium grease.

Would the white lithium grease work, or do you recommend something else?
