I notice that everytime I turn on my heater, my car feels like it looses power. If I'm at a stop and turn on the heater the car will immediately start idling higher. Is this to keep the engine at a certain temperature?
Shouldn't the heater not affect Performance in anyway? (The A/C is obviously not on...)

Is this normal?

yup hes right^^^ the a/c is another story, THAT will reduce your power because it runs off the engines crank

when the a/c is not on the OFF position, you lose power.

the heater doesnt, it just spins the fans and takes hot air from your engine bay. the a/c does when its on causue that f-er spins off the crank shaft to get going, your rpms are just going up a little to compensate for the heat removefd from the engine

how about when you turn the front defroster on? I notice that the air is a lot cooler than normal. Is the AC running? because i like to drive with it on to cool my feet.

no the deforster is just a fan that blows air over the dash, not the a/c, the a/c is a separate unit in itself

wrong as off a few years ago all new cars defrosters use the a/c not at full blkast but if you use your fornt defroesters your a/c is running.

it is because teh a/c helps take the misture out of the air thus defrosting ou windows.

yes it is even running when you have it on hot in the winter. go ask any mechanic who works on new cars,

As someone said even if your A/C button is off and you use the defroster your a/c starts running. Its quite obvious when the air coming out is very cold yet the A/C button is off. I'm glad someone mentioned that because I wasn't sure if i was losing it.

yeah that's what i meant. i leave the knob on the second to last one on the right, where it shoots air from the top of the dash and the bottom so it cools my feet. im the type of person that does't wear shoes when i drive.Yeah, i always thought that the ac was running with the light off but wasn't sure either. now i know, thanks. thumbsup

I do it before a race. It lets out a lot of the hot air, since the car is producing so much more of it.

OK now fer the truth about heaters...

You will not lose power while running it how it werks is by taking hot water from yer cooling system and runnin it through a heater core in the dash, cabin air is moved by a blower motor that is shared by the heater core and the evaporator for the a/c , The fans on the condensor and radiator only come on when the a/c is on or when the temp sensor on the radiator is tripped. the reason racers run the heater is it adds more engine cooling.

So the answer is NO it does not rob horsepower.
