I was wondering what people reccommend for tire pressure when autocrossing.
I have a GTS 16inch rims, Michelin Pilot tires. RIght now there is about 40+ psi in them all, it says max at around 50

I was thinking like 42 in the front, and 37ish in the rears.

Anyone know, autocross a lot? or has any experience.

Im used to my MR2..but rear wheel drive is totally different scenario for tire pressures.

I would want the rear to slide as much as possible! I would say over inflate them. Because it is FWD you will pull yourself through the turns regardless. thumbsup

Proven fact huh? What proof do you have of that? Why do you think rally drivers drift their cars around sharp and slow hairpin turns? Coz it gets the nose of the car pointing out of the turn sooner than it would if you were to just drive it around. Saying stuff like drifting is slower is embarrassing to me and I didn't even say that. Don't ever say that in a crowd of people. You'll look really stupid. thumbsdown

You probably think it's slower because the loss of traction. Not all drifting is "slower." Maybe if you're showing off but rally drivers do it for nothing.

true, what i meant is drifting through an entire autocross course is proven to be slower, watch some japanese videos of the same driver proving it...
but yes in some situations on SOME turns it is faster, and almost always in rallying it is

but in general on the autocross track on road surfaces it is slower

thanks for flaming me smile

steven is correct. drifiting is usually only attempted with rwd cars because they have much great handling with wheel-slip.

it all depends on the curves presented by the track. in some situations it's better not to drif and in others it's better to drift.

watch a drifting competition event or video. look at the way the courses are set up..they are set up to where you HAVE to drift to get a better time because the twists come so fast. you'd be going much to slow just to take the turns without drifting.

again: it just depends on the curves presented by the course that determines whether you should drift or not. one thing is certain though: sometimes drifting is faster--not slower.

I autoX my GTS.. I have 225/50/15 Yoko AO32R Comps and i run 36F 34R and that was with the tires somewhat heated up... i haven't taken the presure with them cold yet. Just look at where the wear is on the tread of the tire. The autoX course design, weather, driving surface, and tire will all make a difference for the air presure, just experiment. One thing that i read to do with tire presure is its the times that tell you what is best not the way the car feels... Read the artilce in Car and Driver BOOST has a great article on a TRD supercharged Celica as well as a good article on tires!!!
