What are everyones feelings on a remote starter. I think that they are cool. There is no real purpose but its still cool. But I mentioned getting one and was bashed by my friends just for bringing it up. So whats your thoughts?

There is a good reason for them...its called WINTER! You can start your car and let it warm up awhile before you drive it.

i think it's a pretty good mod, imo.

it's mostly a 'style' mod, but as grcelica pointed out--it can be more functional under some circumstances thumbsup

Oo I was thinking about that.. for the future. One of my old friends had one and scared the sh*t out of some people who were checkin his car out (dark tinted windows -couldnt tell if anyone was in it or not). Its good for heating up during winter and a/c for summer.

My brother once had his car stolen because of R/S. Word to the wise: make sure your doors are locked when you use it.

How much does a remote start system usually go for? Is it an addon to your existing alarm system?

Yea circuit city can do it anywhere from 150 to 200 for just the remote start.

with my remote start, the car won't go anywhere without the key. if you step on the brake without the key in the igniton, the car shuts off. haha, i guess people still find ways to steal your car.

I have it on my car. The kit cost about $80, install was about $100, and I had to pay about $20 for two relays to bypass the factory alarm. I got it from Circuit City.

The positives: It is good for heating up the car on a winter morning before going to school or work, scaring people who are standing next to it thumbsup

The negatives: I don't get very good distance with the remote, and it's not too good in summer time because the AC takes so long to cool off the car without windows down, on REALLY cold mornings it won't remote start. It'll try 3 or so times and not start. It's like the system isn't holding the ignition long enough.

If you live in an area where it's cold, go for it! Look into a mercury kill switch for under the hood. This way, if the hood is even slightly open, the remote start will not operate. My kit is set up to lock the doors when the system engages, and I can still use my factory alarm system. Or if I want, I can use the new remote and locking the car will arm the alarm.

One more thing... if you get the kit, make sure to put the key in, turn TWO CLICKS ONLY (to "ON") or else you'll burn up the ignition. Also, don't tap the brake until the key is at "ON" or else the car will die (I've done this many times and I just have to start it up again.)

And there is a guy around here who has a remote start on a manual. He was having some work done to the car in a shop, the mechanic was an idiot, left the car in gear, remote started it. The car kept pounding itself into the wall because of the jerk of starting without clutch. And the system is designed to keep trying to start the car until it actually starts, so the car hit the wall a good 3-4 times, which covers about 5-10 minutes of elapsed time. Lucky guy, dead mechanic!
