Has anyone tried removing their AC on a GTS. I'm thinking about doing this mod (I live in Canada, since i never need AC, I'm thinking it'll help with Performance) but I was told it's really hard to find an accessory belt that will fit since every GTS comes with AC from factory. Has anyone tried this? Would a GT belt without AC Fit a GTS without AC??.. please help!

seriusly though iam not be accurate with thw weight but i think thats all the weight you'll take off from the a/c. the a/c does not affect Performance unless its on thumbsup

well to be exact, you gain more Performance than just the weight of the AC because you'll also remove a pulley (the AC motor) that the crank will have to spin... it's the same effect as getting an aftermarket pulley to reduce the amount of weight the crank has to spin... but better because you're actually eliminating 1 pulley instead of making it lighter.

Yeh, we don't need A/C for long in Cananda but it's nice to have it for the 5 days it's hot enough to use it rolleyes

it will yeild Performance because of the elimination of the parasitic lag caused by the ac condenser.

if you can find what size belt you need post it up.

You might not need AC for cooling purposes, but you need AC to defog your windows. And when it's cold, your windows fog like a bitch, don't they?

Um, I don't think so.

The AC Condenser pulley runs on the serpentine belt, so it runs all the time, it just has to run harder when it's turned on. It's the pulley directly under the alternator.

If you want to remove it to save weight, then go for it.

Otherwise, you can just buy a smaller belt and bypass the pulley all together. It's been done before.

And yeah, it's more like 45 pounds, not 5.

oopss sorry my bad i was just trying to make a point that there is really no Performance advantage to it...maybe a little but definetly not worth the time and money to take off thumbsup

i've bypassed mine on a gt, i think it was something like 14 inches shorter. If you go to a auto store, the have the measurement for the belt for your car without an ac. As for Performance, there really isn't much at all of a gain that i noticed, i just took it off because i broke my ac circuit board and didn't want to replace it, never use it in the first place, defroster still works so its fine for me.

There's gotta be a gain in Performance there. By bypassing the AC pulley, you are relieving the motor of 4 pounds to pull.

i think ac needs heat to work anyway, if its too cold outside they dont work.

It's very heavy and easy to remove. You might try and get all of that ducting out.

theres a dyno on n c org of a member who bypassed it via a shorter belt and gained about 4whp.

it does make power, and removing the entire set up would save rediculous amounts of weight, the condensor, pump lines and hoses would be pretty hefty.

the down side is all that weigtht is off the front wheels and on a fwd vehicle you want most of the weight over the front wheels for drag racing launches, or traction will suffer.

if your planning on autoXing, then its better to change the weight bias as the front is usually heavier than the rear of fwd cars.

I use my AC fairly often in Canada. I guess it depends where you guys live but it gets really humid here and AC really feels nice. I wouldn't buy a car without it. thumbsup

No, they are different.

That's why the AEM Tru Power Pulley has two different types for the Celica. One for the GT, and one for the GTS.

The pulleys are both the same, but the belts are different.

werd, if you live in alaska, screw the AC, but why would you buy a celica up there anyway, to snowy spineyes

Hi guys, I just did that on my Celica T-Sport (2ZZ-GE 192hp) and the belt I used was Contitech 6PK1605, probably the same belt you can use in GTS. The belt between 1595 and 1605 should be OK. The compressor is heavy, around 10-12 kg. Tomorrow taking off the rest of the A/C installation from my car.

I know this is an old thread, but I'm posting here for anyone who is looking for a part number that is available in the US. I just bypassed the A/C compressor on my '01 GTS today -- it took some trial and error, but I ended up using a MasterPro K060594 which is 59.4" long.

Regarding installation: My tensioner gave me some trouble since the 19mm hex was completely rounded off by a PO or PO's mechanic. I tried Dremeling it down to get a smaller wrench on it, but then it just broke off. If you have a variable pin spanner wrench (such as OTC P/N 6613), you can use the long pins to get leverage.
Also, I found it easier to put the belt on the tensioner idler and all the grooved pulleys first, then crank on the tensioner and slide the belt over the smooth water pump pulley last. This avoids having to stretch the belt over the lip on the grooved alternator pulley. I would also suggest using an ~18" pry bar to push the belt around in the engine bay if you don't want to bother jacking the car up and pulling the underbody covers off.

NOTE: There is a Youtube video titled "A/C Delete Belt for 2zz-ge - Toyota MR2 Spyder Celica Corolla Matrix Vibe Lotus Elise Exige" that suggests the 2zz compressor can be bypassed with an AC Delco 6K557 (56.25") -- but this did NOT work on my 01 GTS 2zz. He had different pulleys on the 2zz he was working on. YMMV
