Does anyone know how to talk a dealer down a couple g's? What would be some good things to say to get the dealer down for either a NEW car or a USED car? (sometimes it's easier to talk down for used cars) I was just wondering cause some people get owned by the dealer while others owned the dealer. happywink

Most of it just has to do with personality and information. You need to 1) know what the invoice price for the car should be and 2) know how to stand your ground.

The dealer will sell for right around invoice price. You just have to know how to avoid letting him talk you up.

first off, do some homework; find out what the dealers get their inventory for, you can try kelly blue book or edmunds. once you know that it makes it a little easier to figure out what would seem like a good price to bargain with. depending on trends and whats hot and new will weigh heavily on the prices of the car. a good rule of thumb, but not really a rule is say about 800 over inventory price. yet again it varies depending on trends, like if they are getting rid of the previous years or if the car is like the newest model. as far as talking to the dealers, they expect it, and if you don't talk it down you'll feel and will be screwed. just have some confedence, they need your money more than you need the car. just remember it's your cash and only you have the power to give up how much and how little to a dealer. hope this helps, yet again, none of this is really a rule just a good way to not get ripped.

Look for the dealer holdback.

That's the only number you need to know. Tell them they are making $200 on the car, or you are going somewhere else.

They give you grief, leave.

You aren't lucky to buy a car, they are lucky to have you buy one.

Right. And if you threaten to leave, and they don't stop you from doing so, then they don't really want to sell you the car for that cheap. Best time to shop is near the end of the month.

Well I already have my celi.. I just wish I new some of this before I bought it. Fully satisfied, but I recently found a different celi which was closer to what I originally wanted for about $1k (advertised) more than what I got mine for -I talked my dealer down about $2k...stupid dealership keeps messing up on papers though so I can't get my plates yet. Erick.. do you know which dealership he went to? Cause if its the same one I went to I'd suggest never buying a car from them again. The forgot to have us sign some papers, so they had us come back there to sign them.. Then they had missed some spots on the application, so they airmailed them to our house.. ugh.. pain in the A$$!

They need you more than you need them. Don't be afraid to wait. Tell them what you want to pay, if they don't get it to that tell them "thanks for your time" and leave. They'll call you. Trust me.

1. if you live near a city, then the cars are always higher priced, it's always cheaper at a smaller town.

2. if a dealer pressures you, just turn around and leave.

3. if you find an ad in a newspaper that is cheaper always bring that in

4. don't tell them you have a trade in when you first meet them, tell them after you settle on a price. (if you tell them before, they will prolly own't be willing to cut a few extra bucks off)

hang on i have to eat, i'll post some more if i think of them
