A few weeks ago I picked up a 2000 Celica GT for my wife. She loves the car, but hates how loud the interior is (my car (2002 Camry SE), has lots of deadening... www.sounddomain.com/id/mach_y [sounddomain.com] ). So, today I began on a trip to see if I can make the interior a bit quieter for her. I just finished stripping the interior completely out minus the dash. Next up, cleaning the metal very well. The sound deadening products lined up...

5 gallons of liquid deadener (should be enough for 3 coats over the entire interior):
http://www.mcmaster.com/asp/loadpage.asp?pagenum=3270&descid=38468&term=Vibration+Damping+Compound

Mass Loaded Vinyl composite barrier mat:
http://www.soundproofing.org/infopages/flooring.htm

Melanie foam hoodliner:
http://www.soundprooffoam.com/products/melamine/melamine_foam.html

Carpet padding, expansion foam, and dynamat stuff.

Hopefully it will be successful... I'll post pictures and results when done smile

i have lot of noise coming from the door and gauge console and center console.
i might try that dynomat stuff, since i have sub.
but i think the sound is coming from the door handle on exterior.
how would i fix that?

I know they are not meant to be quiet wink But this isn't for me, it is for the wife smile

Fun experiment though to see how quiet I can make it. Short trips I like the noise, but on long trips it gets tiresome.

Ok, here are the first pictures... stripped the car, vacuumed and 409'd the interior. Then applied the first coat of the liquid deadener.

that is the liquid sound deadener. It is the consistency of icing. Spread it on with a brush smile

The layer I applied is dry. It adhered very well to the metal everywhere, and is a little flexible (not brittle). I am happy with it... tonight, mass loaded vinyl mat goes in.

Ok, slight change in plan... I decided to put two entire cans of spray on rubberized bedliner in the trunk area. I also used the expansion foam in all the small areas. The large areas I stuffed with as much carpet padding as I could fit. I used a third spray on bedliner can for the main floor of the car. I also put in the battery terminal, ran the power wire into the cabin (loomed and ziptied into place), reterminated the stock positive power wires with 4 gauge power wire to the battery terminal, and ran RCA cables from the HU around to the back (zip tied in place as well). Couple of pics midway through...

Two nights ago I sprayed the rest of the interior (minus doors) with more spray on rubberized undercoating. Let it dry a day. Last night I put down the mass loaded vinyl mat. That stuff is AWESOME. Very heavy, really good sound barrier smile It covers the entire floor of the car and rear wheel wells and trunk area. I then put the car back together except for the doors. I am waiting on new front speakers (Canton 6.5" components) to arrive before I put the doors back together... that and I am going to put some of the mass loaded vinyl and dynamat type stuff on the doors too. It's looking good so far smile I'll be gone over the weekend, so festivities won't resume until next week though.

Actually, all I have left are popping the door panels back on and it is back together. If the new speakers come in before Monday night, I'll put them in. Otherwise, I'll just put the door panels back on without the new speakers in, and do them over July 4th weekend with the new HU and blue dash conversion smile

Wow, great project. Just wondering cause you didn't answer the guy before, but how much weight do you think that added to the car?

All said and done, maybe 60 pounds. The car is back together, but I have not deadened the doors yet. My wife takes it for its first drive this afternoon, so I'll have a review soon, but I'll wait for better results with the doors done.

I think once the doors are done, it will be very quiet indeed. At 80mph, my wife and I held a normal volume conversation. Even better, with the radio turned low, I could still here the music playing.

I know this is an old post but I just bought a 2005 GT. The previous owner was a chain smoker so now I need to remove the smoke damage.

How did you remove the floor carpet? I'm in a place where I don't have any tools so I'll have to buy everything I need. Do you still happen to have directions for the carpet removal? I need to completely remove the carpet and somehow wash it. It is completely saturated with tar.

Also, I'd like to take the opportunity to add some sound deadening stuff as well. I noticed you used a liquid substance. Is that cheaper, equivalent to, or better than just padding?

Thanks!

Hey guys, how do I remove the carpet? I have an 05 Celica GT that was owned by a chain smoker. I tried wet vacuuming the carpet and 5 gallons of sludge + odor bomb later, nothing has improved. I think the padding underneath must have been soaked with tar and perhaps even lots of soda.

Also, any recommendations on a good washing solution for the carpet?

Lastly, any recommendations on sound deadening compound that could be applied?

Thanks
