i've heard a lot of people talk about lift bolts going out, just wondering what exactly they are, and how you know when they need replaced.

easiest way to explain is that the lift bolts function after 6000rpm. they basically give you "lift", thats why we call them lift bolts. actual part is not called lift bolts. after 6000rpm, ur Intake and exhaust manifold open up completely which gives you the boost, and these lift bolts wear out from excessive revving, or just from time. wear and tear item. very easy to replace. they have redesigned bolts that are on the 02- engines, but they still wear out after a while. if ur bolts wear out or break, you will nomore feel lift, or ull loose power on the powerband. for more info, search for lift bolts. its been discussed alot

yeah, i understand how lift works and all, i'm just wondering about the bolts themselves, as in location and how i know they need replaced. i was just wondering b/c lift doesn't seem as strong as it used to. not sure if i'm getting used to it, or what. searching isn't working either b/c the phrase has been used so much it pops up everywhere, sorry!

yeah, you have an '00 so i'd definately replace them. i just did mine within the last couple of weeks and i notice a significant difference as far as lift bolt locations..they both can be found in this pic:

if your still not sure where exactly they are in relation to the above pic, here's a zoomed-out view (notice the timing chain in the above pic to orient yourself--the lift bolts are both to the left of the engine head)

the lift bolt design was changed in '03 (and up models). it was designed so that the bolt receives less stress than the old bolts and therefore wears significantly less. a GREAT install guide can be found here (along with the tsb and lift bolt part #s) http://www.teamcelica.com/tech/installs/liftbolts/i bought my lift bolts from my local toyota dealer for 49 cents apiece...their not very expensive at all. here's a pic of an old lift bolt and the redesigned lift bolt...your lift bolt (since you have an '00) looks like the 'flat' one and the new lift bolt is the 'pointy' one. hope this has helped

Since I am taking my car in for inspection regarding the Belt Tensioner and Drive Belt under the 100K. Can I ask them to check my lift bolt and have it replaced if needs be?
Also, does the timing chain wear out?

IMO, the lift bolts are covered for the first 36,000 miles. im not sure about it though. you can DIY, its really easy. btw, they wont know wut you talkin about if you say lift bolts, their actually called flange bolts. timing chain does wear out, but it takes longer than 100k miles for it to be changed

Also, does the timing chain wear out? the timing chain is almost never changed in a car's lifetime unless there is a problem with it...i honestly wouldn't worry about it as long as everything is kept well oiled. and yes, you can get your dealer to do it for you..as i said since it's a TSB it's covered under warranty for 60,000 miles (if you bought a certified used car with a manufacturer's extended warrany to 100,000 miles is NOT applicable--only 60,000 miles applies for TSB's). so, if your car is still under 60,000 then you can get them to do it--if it's not i would just do it myself. it really wasn't hard at all. just go to your toyota dealer and ask for the part # mentioned in the link i posted above for the lift bolts

So I just go there and tell them,
"I need to get my lift bolt changed with the newer ones. My car has 53K on it so it is still covered under the 60K warranty"?

^^ here's the link: https://celicahobby.com/ubbthreads/thread.f_57274_0_collapsed_2__1.htmlthe pictures used in that guide make it difficult to orient yourself as to where the throttle cable actually is (unless you already know where it is beforehand). anyway, pop your hood and your throttle cable will be near the middle and to the very front of your engine bay--easy to find, even easier to tighten.

no prob, shoot me a pm afterwards and let me know if that was the problem or not--a lot of the time it is. just make sure you don't tighten it too much..if you tighten it all the way your car will idle at 3000 rpms or something like that lol. your car's factory idel should be at 750 rpms..i tightened mine to 1,000 rpms and i love it--not too high but tight enough to give me the quicker response i value

oh, and get your car warmed up b4 you start tightening/lossening the throttle cable.
my car will idle at a higher rpm when the engine is cold or just barely warm...so wait until its warm so you can get a more accurate reading of what your car will actually idle at

BY the way, they are call "FLANGE BOLTS" not the term "LIFT BOLTS" we been using..tell them it's Flange Bolts or else they won't know what the f*ck you talking about..that happen to me awhile back when i went to buy them..the guy was like, "what kind of bolt?" "where is it located at" "what's it for?" all that bs..they don't know Lift, but they do know "FLANGE" so use it..

The powertrain warranty is to 60K/6yr
If you got a Toyota extended warranty, you are covered until 100K on the powertrain, lift bolts included (they are internally lubricated parts)

If you got a Toyota extended warranty, you are covered until 100K on the powertrain, lift bolts included (they are internally lubricated parts) no, they're not included if you have the 100k extended warranty...its because there is a TSB on the lift bolts. TSB's are only under warranty for the original warranty (60k in this case)
