Can someone explain to me what a 3-way speaker and a coaxial speaker are and why I would want them? Thanks in advance.

Not sure what a coaxial speaker is.

A three way speaker, say in a 6x9 format is broken into three driver. The large driver which is the entire base of the speaker is designed for bass. The second driver might be a small 2 or 3 inch paper cone designed for mid. The third would be your tweeter. The mid & tweeter are mounted in the front of the speaker.

So are 3-ways better than 2-ways? Are they also better than coaxials?

3 ways are better than 2 ways. 2 Ways would have the large driver & tweeter, but not a mid.

Personally, I wouldn't buy a 3way or a 2way speaker; I would buy components. Seperate tweeter & mid bass driver & subs. Much better sounding! cool

A coaxial speaker is just any speaker that combines the tweeter(s) and bass into one speaker. You've heard of component speaker systems right? Component systems are systems you can buy where every aspect of the system is seperate (i.e. the tweeters, mids, and bass are all seperate speakers and usually the tweeters come with there own crossovers).

Coaxial speakers are "all-in-one" and are typically cheaper than component systems. You can have either "n"-way coaxial speakers or "n"-way component speaker systems but it all depends on which you prefer.

Like Haulin_A_Doo said a "n"-way speaker means there are "n" speakers together. For instance a 3-way will have a tweeter for highs, a mid for middle notes, and a sub cone for bass. A 4-way typically has 2 tweeters instead of one. Whether you want them all seperate or "all-in-one" will determine whether you buy a component system or coaxial speakers.

Hope that helps smile.

I have no clue what a coaxial is, but a 3-way IS better than a 2-way because it also includes the tweeter whereas in a 2-way there is no tweeter, hence the reason why toyota celicas have the tweeters in the door, because we have stock 2-ways. with a 3-way you can produce a crisper sound and still be able to pound some bass out of them, they work best in conjunction with a system though, they are better mid-range speakers than 2-ways
