This may be a repost or something, but i was just curious, On a 2000 Celica GTS 6-spd. About how much will the car go with "1" bar of gas left/with the gas light on??? Any takes on how far it will go? Miles wise? eh?

60 for reals? dam i'd always though it went for like 20 miles or something. As soon as i see the light come on i get gas right away. I drive w/ the gas light on no more than 5 miles. Never knew you can go 60 in an auto. guessed i learned something new today =)

First off, gas meters/gauges can be highly inaccurate.

Next time you have 1 bar left, just fill your tank all the way up, and see how many gallons got pumped into the tank. Subtract that number from the maximum amount that the tank can hold.

For example, my gas light just turned on, so I pull in and fill up till it fills up. Right under the price, it says that I pumped in 13.8 gallons. My tank theoretically holds 14.5 gallons (all Celicas do). That means that I had .7 gallons left in the tank before I refilled.

Is that accurate? No, but it's a start.

Anyways, rule of thumb is that once your gas light comes on, you have around two gallons left in the tank. I remember that for my old car, in the manual it stated that the exact number was something like 2.3 gallons left. Times that by how many miles you normally get to the gallon, and that should be somewhere close to 40 more miles you can go.

It might even say how many gallons it takes to make the light come on in the manual, but who knows.

Yah, but the tank holds an extra couple of gallons more than its rated for. I used to ride my empty light all the time until one day I lost & had to walk because I didn't get any cell phone reception.

The gauge isn't accurate at all though.

On the sticker or wherever it says your gas tank capacity, it says reserve tank. Thank number is included in the total capacity. That may (correct me if I'm wrong) be how much is left at light or red.

if you do this, i think gas goes in sparkplugs, quite an amount to fix it unless you know the trick to fix it urself.
now try to run out of gas with a rotary engine, thats a pain in the ass.

No. ohboy

Running out of gas does nothing. The only way it could is if you leave your ignition turned on & your fuel pump keeps running dry, you will burn off your impeller. Or if you had a metal tank, sucking the rusty bits from the bottom plugs your fuel filter, but celi gas tanks are plastic. It really no big deal at all.

The GT auto is the most fuel efficient at 47 miles per imperial gallon x (12.1 + 1) gallon capacity = 616 miles per tank.

It seems like I'm always low on gas. Maybe that's just becasue I've been in a crappy american car for the past month. spineyes

I've made it 40+ miles on the freeway with the gas light on. I was trying to make it all the way home from Lake Havasu on one tank. I was just hitting the 91 freeway when it finally lit up. Did I stop? Nah... didn't have enough sense. rofl

^^ if you drive a stick, don't let the RPMS go over 4 grand if you wanna save gas. I tried that out and it works for me, but you have to cycle through the gears fast to get going.

Use the cruise & overdrive!

And like I said .. imperial gallons & that's what Toyota rates it for. In reality, it doesn't happen because conditions are never perfect. I remember when the 3 cyl firefly's came out & they were rated for the same gas mileage. Its amazing you can get that kind of mileage is a good looking car that has a bit of Performance when you need it. thumbsup

ahh...I didn't get the imperial gallon thing. Now I get it sorry! I would get better gas mileage if I kept my foot out of it for awhile! tasty I never let the tank get low enough to see the lowfuel light I guess. Now I have to try it!

I think if you take along some spare fuel along, and test this theory out,
you'll find out...Just let us know how many miles it got you!...Oh when you run out of gas just use that spare fuel for your return trip. thumbsup

Auto = better MPG in the city
Manual = better MPG on the highway

Anyway, I've gone about 30 miles on one bar (though it wasn't the last bar).

Also, are the 2000-2002 and 2003+ gas meters different?

Not in the GT. Per Toyota, the auto is better on the highway & in town.
