hey everyone i have a question. i have a sony mex-5di cd deck that i just bought, and i hooked it up and no sound came out. i took it to a car stereo place and they said that it was no good. now someone informed me that i need an external amp in order to get sound out. it says no internal amp. does that mean in order for me to get sound i need to hook the speakers up to the amp? and how do i go about making the connections?

If you have a passive head unit then you dont have an internal amplifer. You need to buy a amplifer and hook it up to the head unit via RCA cables.

If you have a passive head unit, you would not have any speaker wires coming out of it, only preamp plugs.

what I'm wondering is how you connected it to the speakers lol I wouldnt think there would be any outputs other then the 3 composite preouts.

ah well make sure you pick up a nice low distorion amp smile

btw DO NOT go back to the place that told you it was broke lol.

be safe and just get an MTX amp or Alpine. I know your gonna go to best buy or circuit city. Rockford is another brand that is good for those stores.

MTX blows lol unless they've gotten better in quality over the last couple years.

Ok first off I do believe that you can get a wiring harness to connect to the stock amp. And JL Audio makes some of the best amps. My 1000/1 is the best amp I have used.

Nope, they are still junk. Good amps are hard to find. Most have complete BS ratings. Amps I would NOT buy: Sony, MTX, Pioneer, Kenwood, Alpine, Rockford & the list goes on. If it sounds too good to be true (wattage vs $), it probably is. Subs need good quality sound too.

I love my JBL amp, its got a lot of power for the RMS rating they gave it. thumbsup

yup like I said with that kinda output you'll want 2 just for that one amp.

I liked the old PPI for the highs and US amps for the lows and mids.

I never thought the JBL's produced a clean enough signal. loud yes clean no.
I'm gonna search and see if US is even still makin those things.

.006 THD thumbsup cleanest sounding amps IMO their 50W amps would owned most 150W amps made by anyone else. their power ratings have always seemed low in my experience. they do put 1 hell of a draw on your system though.

I agree that JBL amps are nice. The BP1200.1(I think thats the name) is a good amp. My buddy is running 2 of them. I still say JL makes the best amps...well cleanest. As for MTX I would stay away from them but Sony most of all. Their super high end stuff is good but not great. I love Pioneer and Alpine decks. As for speakers Alpine or Infinitys.

we used to sell those lol like I said loud but not clean.

THD at Rated RMS Power .1 %

hell even fosgate is at .05% they wouldn't be so bad if they didnt blow out alot.
