yeah, you'd be better off with the straight cut set...it would be cheaper to do in the end, and more reliable too

Stainless steel or any type of material synchros besides brass (or is that bronze ) can't be used on our cars because of the shaft design. I don't remember the specifics, but there's a post on New Celica.org about it (though the site is down at the moment).

Depends on how fast and hard you shift. The faster and harder, the more the synchros wear.

You'll know they're bad when you have trouble shifting into gears, especially in high RPMs.

To help synchronize the input and output gears before they engage when shifting. Without them, you'd have to rev match on every single shift you made.

ooh ok...damn they play a very important role in our cars then. Also where are these synchros located in our cars? and if needed to be changed? Could you do it yourself? Or is it best to have a professional do it?

its not really a DIY mod unless you have mechanical experience.

They're inside the tranny case, right next to each of the forward gears. They should only be brought to an experienced shop to replace. I've heard of a few shops refusing people who wanted their synchros replaced since it's such a complicated job. The new gears and synchros need to be pressed onto the shafts, and if the pressure isn't applied evenly, teeth can break off, or the gears/synchros can even crack. Not an easy job at all, and probably pretty expensive.
