I dont know if this is out yet, but fox news is now saying that 2000 and 2001 models are being recalled because of the daytime running lights are too bright. should hear some more stuff soon.

I've never been happy with the automatic lights. The crazy things can get you carjacked. I got carjacked once in my old Saturn because I was stationary with my lights on. Basically, if the Celica engine is running, the lights are on. thumbsdown

Hey, AFBlue, aren't you supposed to be able to turn off your lights when you pass through a base entrance? Which base are you at, Peterson?

I'm at the academy. I think they get a little bugged because people don't/can't dim their lights, but there isn't anything we can do about it. Where are you stationed at?

I was never in the service, but worked at a few bases (Army and Air Force); White Sands, Norton (in California, now closed), Peterson, Cheyenne Mtn., Redstone Arsenal. Contractor guy.

Is there a way to cut off the automatic lights, I wonder? Anybody?

Go to your dealership, there's a TSB for disabling DRL and auto-on of your headlights.

I believe they'll do it for free.

You can also check the Tech Info (for the TSB) or Installs sections of this site, there's some info in there as well. =)

Also... How could daytime running lights be too bright? confused

Are they talking only about military bases and such, or just in general?

Yes. There's an article in the installs section. Really easy to do.

I've been in front of a 2000 GTS and looked in my rear view mirror...I thought his headlights were on but then just looked closer and realized they were the DRLs...kinda bright but lets think about this for a moment.

During the day time, you've got tons of sunshine, the DRLs just help in noticing cars, esp. from a distance. They won't hurt your eyes unless you walk up to one and kneel down right in front of it while it's on. If it were dark enough to hurt your eyes the auto-on feature would turn on the lows, turn off the DRLs, and turn on the parking lights. Also, recalls are usually only issued for a problem that has a serious potential to put someone's life at risk. That, plus the fact that the source is the ever-reliable Fox News, would lead me to say that there won't be a recall over that.

I wonder whether they'll turn down the intensity, or just disable them.

I'm still happy that I just disabled the whole thing...now I can go around at night with my lights off and play spy games... happywink

You could easily go to the dealer and have that fixed.

Who cares if the DRL are too bright, I don't think they are. Now, my low beams and night will blind people... rofl

No one will ever get pulled over for DRL's around here... In fact, most places it's required that you turn your headlights on in the daytime, if you don't have DRL's tongue

they don't know jack
and plus the recall starts in march
and the squealing belt isn't part of the recall. If it is then they have to get all the Lexus's and do a recall also because all the Lexus that i've seen make that noise
