For those of you who have changed your transmission oil yourself, was it hard? Do you have to keep your car level (because I only have 2 jack stands, I would need 4 so I can lift up the whole car keeping it level right?)?

If it's really hard and takes a while I was just thinking about taking it to toyota so they could change it for me. Any idea as to how much that would cost?

Toyota will rip you. I think they charge somewheres in the neighborhood of $90 for transmission service. Toyota doesn't consider it an oil change, I think they consider it as transmission service.

It's not hard at all. The biggest pain is taking off the underbody engine plastic to get to under the transmission. After that its a piece of cake. Just make sure you have the right size socket, 24mm for GT. Unlike me, who had to buy a socket after I had the car up on a floor jack. You don't need the car up on jack stands, unless you want to be Mr. Safety. Just use a floor jack in the front of the car. After you take out the drain plug let the car down to drain. Then back up again.

Or put the car on ramps. I use a pair of the low-cost plastic ramps from Autozone. They work fine; just be careful when driving up onto them!

I just used a funnel with a long transmission oil tube. And all of it went in. No spills.

jl2fast4u, listen to me:

Unlike what others have recommended:

DO use jack stands!

DO not only use a service jack. Never if you are going under.

Hey, thanks, I ordered some MT-90 today too. Wow, I called several shops around Phoenix, and NONE had any, so I got it on the web.

I noticed the original question included whether or not the car has to be level. Anyone know the answer? It doesn't say in the original thread under the "installs."

uhh when I did mines on my car, I just had the car up on the jack stand and 2 jack stands to support it if it were to fall, it was raised at about 20-30% angle and it was fine.

as someone stated above, if you not using hoist use stands. jack is only for raising the car temporary.
draining and filling the oil is a piece of cake. theres instruction inthe installs section on this site about it. take the nut off, let it drain and if you dont have a pump, just use a small funnel to fill through the small hole.
while ur at it, lubricate the shift linkage with WD40, instructions are also on the site.
these two will give you an ultimate smooth shifts that you never expected from ur car. i did it a few days ago and man it feels nice to shift. too bad the WD40 wears out too quick

depends how ur treat ur puppy.
if you talkin about the new tranny, i would wait for it to break in a little and then change the oil. i would say 10,000 miles and change it.
as of when you put redline, the tranny fluid will last you as long as 30,000 miles without wearing out, but since you drive hard, i would say 15,000 miles for best results.
plus switch to redline engine oil, that thing doesnt even wear out after 15,000 miles, but recommended to change every 10,000 miles if you drive the car hard.
the engine oil is BETTER than mobil 1, actually you can compare it to the mobil synthetic used by penske i think

has anyone found this stuff anywhere but online? I'd rather be able to get this done sooner rather than later.

Nope, I had to get it online also. None of the stores around me had any. However, it took less than a week (about 4 days) to get here. Pretty quick shipping. thumbsup

Go to www.redlineoil.com [redlineoil.com]

You can search for local dealers. The site will list business name, address and phone number.

hmm, I checked it out and it says that all the dealers in my area only carry "water wetter" and "disel fuel catalyst"

I wonder why no one carries this stuff locally confused

rookie, be easy on the tranny for at least a thousand miles man. actually the tranny is not like engine, so you gotta always be easy on it in order for it to function nicely. cz its not like an engine that if you push it hard during break in, ull get a stronger engine.
use the tranny oil they put in ur car for 10,000 miles and then switch to redline.
yes, redline will last you for 30,000 miles but if you really hard on the car, its a good idea to change it every 15,000 miles.
redline dealers arent too many out there. pepboys and autoboys dont really have nothin other than water wetter, and their online search locator is not the best thing. i ended up buying from titanmotorsports.com and few days later i found out that my boss is a good friend of redline dealer.
try NAPA, and call the auto parts stores around u, they might have it as special order.

dont get ramps but get jacks and jack stands. You need the car to be leveled.

For those that have changed their manual transmission oil; what color was the old oil?

I asked this question back on 10/13/04:

"Changed my manual transmission oil yesterday, and I was shocked at the color of the old oil that came out; looked like river mud, sort of dark greenish brown in color.

Caught some in a clear glass jar and held it up to the sun and could not even see any light through it. Is this what other people are seeing when they change theirs?

Only 12.8K miles on the original oil."

OK, I did mine today (the Redline oil arrived). My GTS doesn't quite have 8K miles on it. The old oil was sort of greyish brown, but not looking like mud; you could still see light through it. It was fun doing it; I ended up buying a floor jack, stands, and a creeper so I could keep the car level, and have all the stuff to work on the car in the future. Good stuff, everything was easy and fun to do, and the shifting seems to be pretty good.
