Honda has their patented VTEC and totota has their VVTL-i but do domestics have the same type of engines? Like chevy's new cobalt has an ECOTEC engine and ford has a ZETEC engine.. are they comparable to honda and toyota's VTEC and VVTL?

Actually, every automotive company has technology similar to this. VTEC and VVTI, that is. i-VTEC or VVTL-I...that's a different story.

^^ exactly

VVT-i and Vtec are just fancy terms for variable timing. It's now being used pretty widely in the industry. Vtec is just the most famous because (correct me if I'm wrong) I believe it was the first.

Thankfully someone got this right. VVTL-i is a much more sophisticated and technologically advanced engine than the overplayed VTEC, i-VTEC is more comparable to VVTL-i.

VTEC or variable valve timing was first found on the honda NSX back in 1991.

Sorry, what I meant to ask was, like those of us with GTS's have lift that kicks in at 6800, but I was wondering if the domestic car company's have their own versions of lift and what those engines are called

Well, swapping in a whole new cam lobe as in the lift part of VVTL-i is not done on very many cars. Most have opted for just so-called "continuously variable valve timing", pretty much like the "tamer" version of VTEC, and like on the VVT-i engine. I don't know of any domestics that swap in a higher performance cam lobe. Anybody else know?

Here are many of the different implementations of variable valve timing:

http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Variable_valve_timing

I think Ford finally jumped on the bandwagon:

http://www.ford.com/en/innovation/engineFuelTechnology/variableCamTiming.htm

That Ford page mentions the Triton 5.4 L V8 for the F-150, but I believe the new Mustang uses variable cam timing as well.

I get my kicks on EC.

Honda had VTEC and the whole variable valve timing concept first. When they unleashed the beast at race tracks, they found it to be very efficient and very successful, thus they soon developed it into an everyday vehicle. Furthermore, they also patented the concept for 10+ years I believe and so no one could produce varaiable valve timing until the patent was up. The patent became voided in 2000, thus Toyota and Yamaha used the idea and put better technology into it with the Celica. And now, everyone can have produce variable valve timing.

This is what I have been told by a friend of mine, knows a lot so I believe him.
