Took my car in for the 15K dealer maintence. I brought my own Mobil 1 oil and asked the dealer tech to use a TRD oil filter. Everything seemed to go well.

When driving the car that night something didnt feel quite right, when I let off the gas after accelerating the engine seemed to slow the car down quicker than normal.

Next morning I notice a small amount of oil under my car. Closer inspection reveals that the stupid fK-ing dealership put a GT oil filter on my GTS, and it was leaking around the seal; I then got a ride to the parts store, got the right filter and oil and changed it myself.

The receipt from the dealership even documented the part number for a GT TRD oil filter. The dealership said the best they could do was comp me for the price of the oil and filter I had to replace. I want them to comp for the entire price of the 15K service.

What kind of damage could the wrong oil filter done to my engine if I had not caught it?

leaking oil, thus sluggish engine and eventual lock-up. maybe the filter could have broken out of place. a friend of mine with a 6th gen had this happen. part of the filter was in his oil and oil had flooded his engine and cylinders.

Your lucky you found out the problem quickly. With the wrong filter, I think it just through the oil pressure off and thus your car ran weird. But it only seemed to have leaked maybe 1/2 liter at best, so I don't think any damage was done at all. So I think you'll be alright, just don't trust that dealership again, they suck.

it was a completely wrong filter...

Toyota Oil Filter part #
90915-YZZA1 (GTS)
90915-YZZA2 (GT)

but you'd think that they would still use the same metric thread idunno
i never side-by-side compered the two to see what exactly the difference was...

GTS2003BLK, sorry to hear about your dealership problem... I'm sure that management may be your next step in getting this resolved the way it SHOULD BE taken care of as far as your concerned happywink

At least go back to the dealership, show them the receipts, and make them pay you back for the screwed up oil change. Then, if something serious happened to you engine, you have a good leg to stand on to get them to pay for the repairs. Give 'em hell; you've got the proof.

didnt read the posts on top, but you made a mistake replacing it.
if i were u, i would either let the oil drain til the engine fucks up and then get a new engine on their behalf or else be nice and go back to the dealership and show them what they did wrong and give you free oil changes for lifetime

you cant expect them to pay for something that they didnt fuck up, yea they messed up on your oil change and they agreed to pay you back for it, thats prolly all they have to pay you for, just take the money and dont go back to that dealer thumbsup

^^ i dont think it would be worth the hassle to kill an engine and be without a car and headaches and arguing with the dealer just for a new engine, unless yours is messed up already and about to blow

I think a TRD filter for the 2ZZGE is hard to find; I've asked for one twice at my dealer, but they didn't have it in stock. They did have one for the 1ZZFE though (of course). At least the parts guy I talked to was aware there were two different engines!

^^^ then how do dealership service centers perform the recommended maint on the vehicle? they just keep re-using the old one? wtf
... or substitute an aftermarket piece for genuine part - they are allowed to do this and many actually do happywink

GTS, TRD oil filter Part Number is: 00602-90915-006

GT, TRD oil filter Part Number is: 00602-90915-005

http://www.toyotaoforangeparts.com/scripts/trd.cfm

They use the same size thread, but The body of the GT oil filter is significantly smaller than the GTS one.

My guess is it was leaking because the smaller filter seal could not handle the higher oil pressure of the GTS engine ( I did hit lift several times with the GT filter on), and or the monkey who put it on did not properly oil the gasket, the filter itself seemed to be tightened enough.

Thanks all for the responses. My car seems to be running fine now. The best I can do is get my money back and not go there again. I love my Celica way too much to knowingly blow the engine smile

It seems next to impossible these days to find a mechanic who knows or cares about what their doing. frown
