I'm looking for some extra sound and performance out of my car. I'm prepping my car for a turbo kit sometime late spring or early summer, but until then I want an exhaust, but I don't want one that will either adversely effect my turbo or crap out power until then. I know with turbo 3" piping is good, but that would suck on N/A, right? Would something like the Greddy Evo 2 or TPR suck with a turbo?

uh yes and yes.

Basically with a turbo you don't want any back pressure so gases exit faster and the turbo spools faster. the greddy or tpr both have canisters that have a certain amount of back pressure for good torque and flow. for a turbo you want a straight pipe design that allow gases to exit quickly. best idea is to wait for the turbo, to fabricate an exhaust.

i figured i'd get that response. i really don't want to wait to get an exhaust. could i get one and then instead of fab a whole new system just get the "canister" removed to relieve back pressure? i'm not looking to put out insane numbers once i get the turbo, so i don't need an awesome set-up.

i guess you could do that, the TRD exhaust comes in two peices, exhaust muffler(canister) and tail pipe (tube with a tip that connects to the canister)you can just have someone make another steel pipe to replace the canister and just have a "staight pipe" no muffler. it should work, but it'll be loud as hell.

well, my custom setup is a straight pipe with a performance muffler where the resonator used to be and it is a perfect sound, has a nice rumble but no weedwacker effect and definately no where near as loud as all the civics running around

how about just getting a universal exhaust muffler for right now, then get something else later?

why would you waste the money??? you don't want a muffler unless it's a 3" inlet for the turbo. since you don't care about power and you know you're getting the turbo, get the 3" exhaust done now and sacrifice a lil power. it'll be more cost efficient down the road.

when i said i don't care about power, what i meant was huge gains once i get the turbo from the exhaust.

What he said. Just wait or get the 3" exhaust now.

some muffler shop told my frien that wanted a custom exhaust on his 2004 elantra that 2.5 would ruin his engine due to the loss of backpressure and advised a 2.25 exhaust. something about a valve breaking. said he saw it happen on a neon, so 3' na might be bad

an elantra is not a celica and make sno power to begin with. it won't break anything.

Running a 3" on an N/A car shouldnt lose tooo much power. You'd have to be a fool to buy a turbo and then not care what gains you get. Why the hell would you get a turbo for in the first place???????????????????????????????????????????????????????????? confused confused you're better off doin it the way I said. that way you get the best of both worlds. thumbsup

okay, i lied when i said that. what i meant was i want something powerful yet streetable and don't want to spend huge dollars to push a little extra out of the turbo.

jezus h chirst next person that talks about back pressure go lick a extesion cord it will give you 10 hp

only reason a 3 inch is useless on a na exhaust is because the engine doesn't put out that much exhaust to warrent that big of a pipe a 2.5 is plenty

last week on two guys garage formely shady tree mechanic they tested the exhaust of a ford range 4.0L v6 and guess what on the factory 2.5 inch exhaust there was less then 1 psi of pressure

only time "back pressure" is needed is in a 2 stoke application

hey thats a 20 minute phone call

what are some examples of a 2 stroke application? i am just trying to figure out why this guy wont do the elantra exhaust in 2.5 inch from 2.0 inch-he says he will do a 2.25 inch at most

a 2 stroke as in a dirt bike or those lil pocket bikes or any type of engine wher eyou have to mix oil in to the gas

2 stroke relies on the pressure and vacume of the exhaust in the expansion chamber (muffler) to suck in the new fuel and air and get out the old on a 4 stroke app like every car the exhaust is useless jsut a by product

the guy who said 2.5 is bad is prolly the same one that runs an electric turbo on his 3 cylinder metro

Personally with my turbo running low boost, there wasnt much difference between 2.5" and 3" power wise on the dyno. However there was a big difference with muffler and without. However if i was running more boost i think the 3" will make more of a difference.

This forum is really uneducated. Backpressure is never a good thing. The thing you have to worry about w/ having a 3" exhaust on a n/a car is the loss of flow velocity. When the exhaust exits it needs to have a certain flow velocity to exit properly. Without it, the exhaust will scavenge and hang out in the exhaust cylinder and then it takes more work for the engine to push it back out. I know there is a formula or something to figure out proper fpi to create optimum performance. With a 3" exhaust, you'll lose some bottom end and make the engine work harder. There is an article on team-integra.net that covers this whole topic.

Q: How do you double the value of a Ford?
A: You put gas in it.
