should I flush my oil system before I go full synthetic or just change the oil filter at the 1,000 mile mark? My car has 14,000 on it.

yeah...just stick to a reagular oil change when swiching to synthetic...but don't change to synthetic until you have like 25,000 to 30,000 miles on your car because your valve seals will not be worn in poperly (or so we had a debate about a couple of months back)

well I don't want standard oil shitting up my engine. What I meant by change the oil filter at 1k is that syntheitic oils have a detergent property and clean out all the shit in your engine left behind by normal oil. If you don't flush yur system your filter can get clogged with all that shit comming out of your engine. So you change your filter at the 1k and 3k mark to keep that from happening.

My valve seals are the exact thing I'm worried about in the switch to synthetic. I was thinking maybe going synth blend first. I just don't want regular oil in my car for 30k miles, I drive my car hard and want the protection of synth.

You guys know that the high-end cars such as the new covettes and such come straight from the factory with synthetic oil.

I believe ... it's actually worse to change to synthethic after you've drivin you car for many miles ... because of the value seals leaking from conventional oil breaking down around them.

But to each there own ... I went to synthetic after the first oil change. Haven't had any problems since.

^ that makes me feel good then. Yeah I've heard that, that why I personally didn't understand the convention of valve seals leaking or breaking but I've gotten a lot of flack from people around here (not Ecelica) about swtiching to synthetic. I think that's a lot of stuff that's still floating around from the early idea that synthetic oil wasn't as good.

From a science news report ...

"Synthetic oil is generally thought of as a lab-created lubricant. Widely used by racing drivers and the factory-fill choice for several high-performance cars, including Corvettes, Aston Martins, Porsches and the Mercedes Benz AMG. The only car manufacturer that advises against use of synthetic oil is Mazda.
It is believed to protect against metal wear within an engine, increase fuel efficiency, and allow a much longer interval between oil changes than conventional oil."

I believe this is what people are talking about with leaking ...

"Another little-known downside is that switching to a synthetic oil on an old engine can result in oil leaks. Why? Because the detergents in the synthetic oils will "clean-up" the varnish and sludge left by conventional oils. If your engine seals are worn, the synthetic will break down the oil varnish that may be maintaining the seal. So it's not that the synthetic oil caused a leak, it just that it revealed worn seals by cleaning the varnish off of them. Many people have switched to synthetic on 100,000+ mile engines with no leaks, so it just depends on how often you changed your oil and the overall condition of your engine."

That's my 2 cents ...

This is from the faq page on Mobil 1's site:

Q: Can different synthetic motor oils be mixed together?

A: Mobil 1 with SuperSyn- is fully compatible with conventional motor oils, semi-synthetic motor oils and other synthetic motor oils, should it be necessary to mix them. But the superior performance of Mobil 1 with SuperSyn- will be reduced by diluting it.

And this from the Myths about synthetics page on the same site:

Myth: I need to flush my engine before switching to Mobil 1.

Reality: No special preparation is necessary when switching from conventional motor oil to Mobil 1 with SuperSyn-.

I did an oil "flush" or "purge" or "detergent cleaning" or whatever Toyota calls it, 3 times at the dealership at close to $100 each time since I owned my car. The last time is when I switched to synthetic. I just wanted to get out all the crap that was in there everytime.
It didn't even invoke the thought that old engine oil and syn mixed that kind of crap. I had the system flushed many times just because (to keep it simple) and it was easier for Toyota to do it than myself.
Since the change to absolute full Mobil 1 sythetic, its made not even a whisper of a difference.

nice I'm just gunna throw in Mobil 1 then. I'll change the filter early to prevent the scum from building up.

Another reason people get oil leaks from the synth is because it fills up your filter with all the shit from the engine when you first change to it.

Dynomite, mobile 1 here I come.

Any special "formulization" I should use??

I was wondering about this myself. I have been getting regular oil oil changes because that's what I've had in it, but would like to switch to synthetic. I have almost 40k on my car currently, switching wouldn't be a problem for me? I also found it interesting because I was actually wondering if the no mixing thing meant that you couldn't mix the oil and synthetic at the same time or if you should jsut never use synth if you usually use regular, but the mobil site says that even mixing regular and synthetic is not bad accept for the fact that you won't get the full advantage of having full synthetic. guess the synth and reg oil thing is only an urban myth that people like me beleive cause they're too dumb to look it up.

yup i changed it out without a flush and it's working great. Just go full synth! However, since your car has a lot of miles on it, change your oil filter at the 1k the 3k and the 5k mark. The synthetic oil will act as a detergent and get a lot of all the gunky shit from your engine bay. You want to prevent your oil filter from getting clogged. So by changing the filter more regulalry you will prevent that shitty buildup from cloggin the filter.

I'd also like to switch to mobil 1 synthetic oil...I've had the car for 3k and i don't know what the previous owner used...but i'm gonna drain it and put mobil one in...i'm at 62k...so it shouldn't be a problem, right? Also are there better or worse filters to get? Any namebrands that are good or not good to get?

K&N gold performance is the best. It has an antiflow back that the TRD doesn't have. K&N makes the TRD filter. K&N can also be removed with a socket wrench. The part number is HP-1003
