Is sport shifting an advantage when racing? How much of a difference does it make?

did you mean the manual/automatic tiptronic thing on the gts? with the + and - on the steering wheel to shift? or some term you herd about?

dude seriously no more F + F comments... the only thing different from normal everyday driving is you shift faster and run your engine to higher RPM's...

i have never ever heard of sport shifting so if someone could explain what it is to me...

Sport-shift is what they call the tiptronic in the GTS isn't it? And all of you who pulled the F&F card...I don't think they ever talk about "sport shifting" in either movie.

yea the car actually shifts a lot slower than when its in drive. if you want to race or somethin just put it in drive. i tried using sport shift when i went to the track and...the times were a lot slower than they should have been. just keep it in drive, the tranny can shift itself much faster in drive and its smoother thumbsup

some auto gtsers really dig the sport-shift. some guy at NC has put a tourque convertor on his and says that it helped a lot. only time slips will tell...

no. there is another. and yes it has been done and seems to work very well. you have to add around $600 worth of labor on top of that though.

here is the guy's review:

"Just got my car back today!!!

The JMO T.C. service wil set you back $800 -- JMO raises the stall speed 600 RPM above stock and machines the internals to improve efficiency of operation -- similar to lightening the flywheel on a m/t car. A high performance tranny cooler is also included with the service (don't think that's included with Level 10 ...). It breaks down to around $500 for the T.C. and $300 for the cooler.

For more details (these links were posted earlier in this thread ... but here they are again)

http://www.jmousa.com/us/flash/frame/index.html

http://www.hondatuningmagazine.com/...11ht_converter/

Unfortunately, I don't have before and after dynos or timeslips -- so let me qualify my review by noting that all performance gains are being judged based on the good ol' seat-of-the-pants-dyno. I will get some timeslips soon so that one can make a rough comparison of my car to the somewhat lackluster performance noted elsewhere on stock a/t GTS's.

Anyway, having said that, the Celica definitely seems to have much better off the line response, and acceleration! At least based on my first impressions behind the wheel, the JMO T.C. seems to make the most of what little torque the 2zz can put to the wheels in an a/t car! Again, I will try to obtain and post some hard facts for rough comparisons with other a/t GTS's soon!

If you have an a/t GTS, IMHO this performance upgrade is definitely worth doing! Naysayers, scoff if you will, but this is still less expensive than a full tranny swap + new ECU, unless you do all the work yourself and use junkyard parts.

Labor to install the T.C. & cooler kit was around $700 by a local speed shop, XAT Racing http://www.xatracing.com/index.html. They specialize in Nissans and Toyotas and do excellent work! Great customer service too! While the Celi was over there I also had TRD struts, springs and swaybars installed (around $400 labor, BTW) -- so I am ready to autox after the springs settle and I can get an alignment! "

They are talking about sportronic also known as triptronic automatic shifting. F&F talked about double-clutching, that is about it. rolleyes

sport shift on the GTS is pretty nice cause you can shift pretty fast, but it's different than driving a regular manual tranny since it's not. The best way to utilize it is to start off in first don't run the RPMs too high cause shifting from first lags a bit and you'll hit the limiter, shift to second, run up the RPMs high, go to third then shift over into drive and shut the overdrive off, doing it right scores you right in lift and you take off. Using the sportshift alone isn't too great cause it's all down hill after third.

that's the point there isn't a difference. When racing as in drag racing you shouldn't really be in 4th unless your around 75-85 MPH because you lose acceleration ability.

EDIT: This obviously doesn't apply to a manual tranny

I thought, auto's couln't get into lift???? And if they can I think I've felt it on first gear only...but only when the engine is still cold at about 4000 RPMs

that's why I'm afraid of manuals, don't want to get into slow traffic because you can't start on like 2nd gear from a stop can you (like an auto GTS)? Also, I thought you could hold down the clutch to keep it in nuetral, just in case ure idle????

you thought wrong thumbsup Granted it takes a bit more skill to get it to STAY in that range since an auto will shift in order to keep your car at lower RPMs. But they still get into lift, after all the engine is the same, still has lift technology. The whole challenge is keeping it in lift, which without the sportshift is a bit challenging to say the least.

yup, you'll feel it kick in if you got triptonic use it. If not shutting your O/D off will help a bit. The whole thing, like I said, is just getting it to STAY there instead of shifting out. But if you have gotten the hang of forcing the auto to shift or not shift with creative acceleration and breaking it won't be too bad.

1st you can start in 2nd but its very bad so dont do it on manal smile yea in stop and go traffic you jsut ahve to kep using clutch gas to inch forward. now in a constant sow moving you cna stay in like 2nd and as long as you dont stop just keep going. its no to bad but stp and go is in no way fun.

2nd yea wen you pus in the clutch is liek neautral and it idles. but unlike an aut, wen an auto idles you keep moving. when a nual idles there is no linkage between engine and gears so you dont move. If i messed anything up someon let me know, i am still alittle new at shifting smile
