I have had my 2005 Celica GT (automatic) for 2 weeks now, and after putting on 1500 miles, I thought it was time to test the car a little.

However, I got a surprise when I was pushing the car in a hairpin turn (uphill) - the car lost traction and skidded with screaming tires on dry pavement. Several other times only the rear end skidded. My car came stock with Bridgestone Potenza RE92 195/60/15 tires - could these be at fault?

My driving is a mix of highway (commute) and windy backroads (for fun). What would be good tires for my kind of driving? I live by the coast, so I don't need tires that can handle snow, but they should be able to handle wet pavement.

Now, over to other questions:

Does it matter what octane gasoline I use on the 1ZZ-FE engine? The handbook says 87 is ok, my dealer advices me to use 89 for regular use and 91 if I want to push my car.

Is there really any gain from CAI/RAI on the GT's engine or is this overrated?

Thanks!

Are you planning on getting rims or just replacing your tires on your stocks? 87 octane gas is fine for the gt. Thats what I always used except for the occasional shell 93 which has additives that clean your intake valves as you drive. A cold air intake will work fine with the gt's engine. A short ram also but not as much as a short ram. Just make sure if you get a cai you dont go over any big puddles and def. dont push the gas when going over any puddles.

i use 87 most of the time for my auto gt, 91 on occassion, i recently replaced the tires on my stock 15s with yokohama avs es100 which provides really good dry and wet traction, so you might want to look into some performance tires to better suit your driving style

I would like to use the rims I have, they are the 15" aluminum alloy wheels.

Thanks!

So you were pushing your car on a harpin turn going uphill. Did you really expect not to skid?

my dad says that anything but 89 is overrated... there's not that much difference between regular and plus? <-- (is that the next one up? haha) and the "best" kind of is too expensive so he says that "anyone who uses the more expensive gas is stupid" haha... (i don't want to hear any comments about my dad's comment either cause he's 65 years old.. and a lot of people are stupid to him.. haha.. nothin i can do to change that)
