so i went to get my plates today and since i dont get my license till next week my friend drove my car and after he dropped me off at work he drove my car home. He then calls me up telling me that he misshifted from 5th to 2nd going 60 mph and that the car shut off on him and when he turned it back on he got a CEL. He then went to this mechanic he knows and got it checked and he got the CEL off but i am just wondering what i should worry about. i turned on the car right now and it sounds fine and runs the same as this morning. I also know it was dumb to let him borrow my car but i figured since he has a 6 speed gts he'd know what he was doing and i figured he wouldnt mess up with the shifting and i also didnt wanna risk driving it myself because my suspension will be over in 7 days and i didnt wanna risk it.

i kinda doubt he was doing 60 because if you can do 60 on 2nd why would the car shut off on him?

I can go 60 redlining in 2nd gear...

Maybe he was just a little over, and the car went past the fuel cut and shut down to save itself? Do they do that? tongue

Anyway, I guess if everything sounds OK, runs OK (you don't notice any loss of power or other quirks while driving at various RPM's), then it probably wasn't -too- major. Otherwise, have a mechanic take a look!

no i get to about 65 70'ish at fuel cutoff in 2nd on my 04 gts. so you cant redline at 70. could be that he was jsut over the fuel cutoff so the car shut off. i dont know, havent tried it wink

Stupid question but what rpm range is damaging for the car, ex. 8500? 8800? I know its not good to stay up that high but if the needle jumps up to 8500 for a sec should I be worried?

And will fuel cut off work while the gear is in neutral?

if ur in neutral it onyl lets you rev to liek 7000 atleast on my gts. except if the car is moving then i believe it goes all the way to cut off. i woudl say 8800 is bad wink

i would seriously take it to a mechanic, or a toyota dealer and have them find out what miles he was going when he shifted to 2nd.
u can go higher than 60 on 2nd, but think of it this way. driving on 5th gear doing 60 maybe ur around 4k rpm, and then all of the sudden you downshift to 2nd without revmatching, first of all, the car is gonna jerk like crazy, ull damage the motor mounts well enough, and then ull put the engine in one big of a fuckin stress. that could cause a problem.
i dunno man, you dont want someone to fuck up ur car before you owning it, and then he tells you "its fine", his mechanic says the same cz ur friend convinced him to say so, and 2 months down the road ur car goes nuts on u.
plus i say ur friend is a pretty bad driver, how would you shift from 5th to 2nd? one is like 2 miles from the other.
good luck

My advice to you is to not let him drive your car again, and he pays for any damage done.

get compression checked, that would give you a sign if the valves are bent a little.

Sounds like your "friend" checks his genitals at the door when driving other people's cars!! He probably had trouble driving his "Big Wheel" as a toddler.

Hope everything works out OK! thumbsup

I downshifted from 5th to second to pass an 18 wheeler. I was doing 80. I clutched it though as it redlined and disingauged the tranny. The short shifter I have causes me to miss shift from time to time.

haha, I misshifted today, 3-2 meant to go in 4th, but I caught it and shifted into 4th and took off b/c some dickhole in a big truck wanted to ride me.

i believe you start to get valve float around 8600+ thats why they lowered the fuel cut after 01 but you will never make it to 8800 unless you have the PFC or a misshift ... naturally spineyes
