Hi all. Around 2000 to 2500 RPM, the engine makes a rhythmic sound. It is not audible below 2000 and rapidly diminishes above 2500 RPM. It also occurs while stationary or in motion.

Any ideas what it could be?

Good video -- thanks for including it!

Now that you know how to reproduce the noise, the next step to determining the problem, is finding out exactly where it's coming from;

Run your engine with the hood up and either open the throttle manually from within engine bay, or have a friend press the accelerator pedal (obviously while in park) and listen to where the vibration noise coming form.

Have you taken a look at your alternator/pulley belts? Whats it look like? Torn, worn or very thin?

If it makes that same noise between those RPMs no matter what gear you're in, it could be your timing chain. Is your Check Engine Light triggered? If yes, by using an OBDII reader; what codes is it throwing?

How long has your Celica been exhibiting this noise?

In addition, (an inexpensive part but costly for the labor charges) would be if you notice your engine also "jumping" when you accelerate. That could be your rubber motor mounts. If they have gone "flat" or hard or are cracked, that could begin causing issues to start happening, such as this noise. If your engine is vibrating and there is no way to dissipate that vibration through the mounts, the stress gets shared with everything else connected to your engine. These are made of rubber, but some people replace them with aftermarket versions made of urethane.

As a side / very random question: Is that noise definitely coming from your engine? or could it be that your exhaust hanger has torn and it's dangling as your engine reaches highe revs -- such as a license plate frame could do when some people blast their deep bass music.

Thanks for the reply.

I will check under the hood tomorrow. I will try to reproduce in all gears.

It has been doing this since I got it 4 months ago. It's used... I got it from a lady who owned it (she was a chain smoker). It has about 78,000 miles.

Incidentally, today I felt something like a jump or lurch while accelerating through 2nd gear. Not sure if it was just a slippery surface such as a painted line or what. Will try to reproduce further.

It seems to definitely be coming from the front half. However, there is also a whistling-like sound coming from the rear during bumps and potholes (I'm in New York!). The two sounds are definitely isolated from one another and not related.

I shot another video of the engine compartment. 25 seconds in it seems like the phone picked up the rhythmic semi-whistling sound better.

Video 2 - engine [youtube.com]

I couldn't tell if it's the serpentine belt or something else. I'm not a car expert though... I did notice that one of the accessories on the belt has about a half millimeter lateral oscillation. I can't tell if the belt is not of uniform width or if the component has a slight oscillation. The guy I got the car from changed the serpentine belt. I'm not sure where the timing belt is on this car or even how to get to it.
