Seen them on quite a few cars. I was wondering, are they just for a sporty look? Or are they functional, confused and helpful to the performance of the car?

For a normal street car, it's just gives it look to make it look more aggressive. For rallying, in those cars such as the WRC cars, they perform a function but I don't know what. I think they look pretty cool, but if it doesn't do anything, then what is the point of getting it? But it's for looks, but I wouldn't want it because I would be afraid people would say, wtf is that and what does it do, you said say nothing and they would be like, "oh you put that and it doesn't do anything? thats gay"
but I mean it don't matter. I still like them.

All they are is a fresh air inlet for the cabin if you've ever watched any rally you'd notice the windows are up to keep out dust.

Throwin' this out, but could it be an air intake for a car that has a rear engine compartment? I'm pretty sure I've seen a roofscoop with tubes hooked up inside.

I don't think it is used as an air intake. For rear engine cars, they have side vents for the intake. It may be to circulate air inside the cabin for the rally cars.

Ok, its for looks and for some of the cars its got their functions, MidEngine uses it for air intake since their engine does not get enough air from the back, not like front engines do, they put theirs on the roof or sometimes you see them on the sides,NSX and MR2 got them customized. for rallying, like CID498 said: All they are is a fresh air inlet for the cabin if you've ever watched any rally you'd notice the windows are up to keep out dust.

They're not used for fresh air as some have said. They're used to pressurize the interior to keep dirt and dust partials from coming into the car.
