I got a 2003 GTS with 20,000 miles on it and every time my car is at idle it makes so much noise. I only had it for a year and it sounds like its 5 years old. Its a pretty new car but shouldn't it be more quiet than this? I can hear the belts spinning pretty loud. Does anybody else have this problem?

I have a 2000 GTS and I had very bad engine vibration and noise when my CEL was on. When I got rid of the CEL my car was much quieter and the vibration all but stopped - how strange. How's the maintenace of your car? I've had oil changes every 3000 miles, every scheduled maintenance 15,000, 30,000, 60,000 miles, injectors cleaned, twice some sort of oil sludge purge on my ride and it purrs like a kitten with close to 70,000 miles

if it's engine noise, try synthetic motor oil

yea i'd go w/ the synth. oil (only have to replace 5k miles, it'll go to 7k if you push it...not recommended tho), or maybe tighten the throttle cable, maybe it's idling too low and its causing too much noise...

I have similar experiences, the car is a bit loud and its slightly under 40,000 miles. Is synthetic oil really better? and if so when is the best time to change over?

I have a 2003 GT and i havent notice any loud engine noise
but i only have 1800 miles on it.
I would also recommend trying synthetic oil too.
I know that hondas have loud valve tapping
then once you put good oil in it it all goes away.
You never know its worth a shot thumbsup

after I use lift a couple times I hear a "tap tap tap tap tap" sound from the engine, the higher I rev and the longer I run at high rpms the loud/more frequent the tapping gets.

I run mobil 1 (for a long time now) and changed every 5K

Sounds like almost everyone who has a celica has this problem. I don't expect the engine to purr, but I also don't expect my 2000 GT at 39K to sound like my dad's friggin old BUICK at 90K.

this probably isnt it...but when at idle your fan will often come on, which makes a lot of noise.

when your at idle and your car is making a lot of noise..is it vibrating also? j/w...like i said i'm sure you know what a fan sounds like, but just maybe.

I agree...I only have VVT-i but this still happens to me clicking/tapping sound from the valves, I switched to Mobil 1 synthetic and it help a lot but still happens when I drive hard. Typically if I drive "normal" for a day it goes away completely till i decide to drive hard again.

I also heard that our valves are self adjusting, and dont need to be serviced for clearances, is this true and could it be the reason for the excessive clicking/tapping after hard runs? Seems logical.

In regards to the ticking sounds from the engine block...I have had this problem with another car. Make sure that when oil is added, that you don't add TOO much oil. Too much will make your lifters stick and the timing will be off. As a result, the lifters may become bent over time. That is usually the ticking sound. What is happening is that the lifters are actually hitting the against the headers and/or other metal pieces. Sometimes it goes away after warming up your car for a few minutes, sometimes not.

That sounds reasonable but they were saying that it happened after having a car for a very short time. It wouldn't cause the lifters to go bad after that short amount of time.
