I want to put together a comprehensive post on what it is and what you can do about it. Mainly because I have it and I want it gone, but then other people will be able to look it up also.

So, with that said. What is it? What causes it? And what can we do about it?

Probably you have to use higher octane number petrol.

Ok, now if you have knock, and you put in "Valve Silencer" is that the same thing. Or is silencing the valves and taking away knock two completely different things?

I don't know "valve silencer", but don't add it to your engine (if it is a octane booster it might help).

I think you need better fuel (higher octane number)

Which fuel do you use?

could be higher octane, also you may need
fuel injector cleaner if your injectors have many miles on them. Also check your fuel filter and spark plugs.

Knock is the when the air/fuel mixture spontaneously ignites prior to the spark being applied. It is caused either by high pressure or temperature than normal. Higher octane gas burns slower and is more resistant to spontaneous ignition therefor a high compression engine like the Celica's needs premium(at least 92 octane) gas. If your spark plug has excess carbon build-up it can create a hot spot in the combustion chamber or if one of the injectors (like was already mentioned) is clogged it can create a lean condition which increases the cylinder temp. causing knock. Check your plugs and if you have white specks on it, you were running lean.
