Here the deal..Im in High School so it may seem childish. My friend has an SI and I keep telling him Celicas are better. Im bout to buy some new stuff since my GTS is stock. Im going to get TRD exhaust, intake, shock and springs, and most likely get a body kit installed. Ive been saving and my bday is coming up. Anyway to cut to the chase my dad's a mechanic and so me and my friend were talking one day and i was telling him my dad is a mechanic and he use to own his own shop. Then I told him I would just have him install all my engine parts and so forth. Then my friend keeps telling me thats not fair, you're going to look stupid because you didn't do it yourself and shit. I looked at him and said shut the hell up why would I do it mess up something when I could have him do it right. Then he procedes to tell me that he won't race me because I would've had my dad to do all my engine work. It might sound stupid but it pisses me off. I dont know why haha

if i were you, i'd work on the car myself. to me thats what part of having a nice car is, keeping it nice. i work on my own car. the only time i take it to a real mechanic is if its something i really don't want to get my hands into, like internal engine work and stuff. but yea, the best thing i think you can do is to do the work yourself. but get your dad to watch you and show you how to do the work. that way you can learn more about your car.

a stock gts is better than a stock si, the #'s back it up.

as far as installing mods, bolt-ons are not hard and are a lot of fun. you might want to ask your dad to look over your shoulder though because you will learn more about your car this way.

for more technical mods (turbo, body kit, springs)...i'd send it to my dad if he were a mechanic. you might want to watch but i wouldnt touch.

Also, if he doesnt know how to do certain things, he could have his dad HELP him. By help, I dont mean do it all. Just lead him in the right direction. My dad is also a mechanic and also used to work in a body shop so he knows quite abit about vehicles (inside and out). I learned a lot from him from changing brakes, to rebuilding an engine.

I guess I just had a bad experience. I took it to a shop because my dad was not available and the guy had to put a new clutch in...not only did he put a huge DENT on the front floor of my car, but he also charged me for an oil change which I had just changed the week before! I guess I just like doing things myself because I now I will not mess something up like the above mentioned.

tell your 'friend' to quit being a whiney cry-baby and get over it. he cant tell you whats right and wrong, because its not his car thats being worked on, its yours.

That's stupid. Yeah, I do work on my car, but I also have a personal mechanic at Toyota that does all the hard stuff. He can tell me what's worked better on other celica's that have come in. Alonzo has a lot more experience than I do and it helps to have him there. Tell your friend to get over it.

My dad is a mechanic but so am I I guess...though not an auto mechanic, but I know how to use my hands

I am modding my car myself any thing I do to it I do, though Im not that good with wiring yet, and I have yet to dabble in fiberglass or some other advanced things

If I have any technical questions I may ask him...or come here depending grin

Well, my pops passed away a long time ago. I grew up not knowing how to keep score in football nor how to work on cars. Luckily, I am a sponge when it comes to cars. So, my advice to you is to read over these install guides on the site here and tackle the work on a day your dad has off. That way, if you run into a dillema, he may help you. Hell, make it bonding experience. Good luck. let us know how bad you beat him.

Itake and exhaust arn't too bad, but I'd recommend getting professional help w/ the coils. You need a spring compressor from my understanding.
