I had read that the Matrix with the same 2zz engine as the GTS rated at 180 HP was in reality only 173. This obviously not at the wheels. Can this be true?

My real question is that if this is true did Toyota lower the HP's not to have a direct competition with itself? If this is true. I've read from some Toyota people that the Matrix only puts out 173. I don't know if this is true, but I also read that when the Celica was first introduced to the states that it gained some mysterious HP? I don't know, that's why I'm posting here.

it's funny a stock celica gets 15.3 when a matrix with a sc gets 15.7

Let's all remember that the Matrix that we are talking about must have massive drivetrain losses compared to a GTS and possible weight. But it still is humorous, I guess. What about the engine?

Just because it's the same engine doesn't mean that it's tuned the exact same way. The new Elise has the same engine as ours and it's tuned to 190.

according to toyota's official website ( http://www.toyota.com/vehicles/2004/matrix/specs.html ) toyota no longer even manufactures a matrix with the vvtl-i engine (2zz). furthermore, when i bought my celica a sales rep was saying how the matrixes no longer have the 2zz engine (this was lat august). i don't know the reason, but that's just the way toyota wants it to be.
