Uh...

Why wouldn't you want O/D on while you're on the freeway? O/D is the 4th gear in the autos, it's supposed to be used all the time. The O/D off feature would be used mostly for steep hills and things like that.

O/D Off means you have 3 gears, meaning when you drive ur car is more alert and burning more gas since its on higher rpms. probably the O/D turns on automatically later on cz ur third gear probably was on redline

i have an automatic and my overdrive doesnt turn on automatically (at least the indicator by the speedometer never comes on). i have found when i push the o/d button, it seems like the car is pulling harder and the RPMS are higher. idunno

ur O/D should be set the way you set it. shouldnt turn on/off by itself when you start the car. when you push the button on the shifter, light should come on with O/D OFF(or vise versa when you release the button). when O/D is off, the engine is more alert as you burning more gas since ur on high rpms cz you only using three gears. Its just another way of engine braking. just like you have 1 and 2, Drive will function as 3. Toyota recommends that when using the gears 1,2, to have O/D OFF. O/D OFF shouls usually be used on downhills and during bad weather days or bad road conditions.

ok, well, whenever i start the car, the light doesnt pop up, so im just assuming its not a big deal that id ont ever use it...if it was vitally important, it would pop on by itself, because it is, afterall, an automatic haha

ah well.

The light is for OD off. When you push the button and the light comes on, that indicates that you have disabled OD (4th gear). Trust me when I say you're using it, or you would be getting about 15 mpg on a good day.
