AEM Underdrive Pulley Install & How To Remove or Install Alternator

Using the guide provided with the Pulley kit pointed me in the right direction when I first under take this task. I ask you to do the same thing when installing you pulley if you are going to do it yourself as well.


1) First of all disconnect the positive battery terminal with a 10mm wrench. This is very important when working with an alternator.


2) Take off the plastic engine covers in the engine bay. These are held on by a bunch of plastic pop rivets. Using a small flat head screw driver helps in removal. This will expose the area on the passenger side of the engine bay where the pulleys and alternator.




3) Disconnect all wires connected to the Alternator. And to the left of it to aid in removal later on. Some need to be removed with a 12mm wrench. The rest can be popped off with your hands









4) Take off the plastic fuel rail cover that is connected to the valve cover to help remove the alternator.


5) Using a 3/4 inch wrench you will need to literally need the power of Zeus to relieve the tension on the tensioner by pulling the wrench towards the front of the car. Be careful it is on securely. Pull as hard as you can while a friend pulls the belt off the alternator.



The wrench must be on the area the blue arrow is pointing to.


6) Take off the four 14mm bolt attached to the top and bottom left side that connect it to the engine block. Also along the top that uses a metal bracket to secure it to under the very left Intake runner.


7) Now you can work the alternator out of the engine bay. You will have to unbolt the throttle mechanism in front of it to ease removal from the engine bay.

8) Remove the stock pulley with the use of an impact wrench or take it to a shop that can replace it for you. It's very important that the new pulley is put on just as tight as the original.

9) Jack up the front passenger side and place a jack stand under the car in the appropiate place and remove the plastic panels to the center of the car to expose the pulleys and side of the motor we are working on. Removal of the wheel helps but isnt necessary.


10) Place the Alternator back in the car in its original location. And replace the bracket and 14 mm bolts.






11) Replace the original belt with the longer one supplied in the AEM pulley kit. Be sure to the follow the instructions exactly on the sheets provided by AEM. Replacing the belt the wrong way can result in destruction of the engine.


12) Pull the tensioner back as hard as possible while your friend works the belt back over the Alternator.


13) Double check the belt is on each pulley on the side of the motor properly as in the diagram on the installation guide provided. This is very very important.


14) Bolt the throttle mechanism back to the chassis. And reconnect the wires back to the alternator and other areas close by you may have disconnected to help removal. Be sure all wires are in their proper location.


15) Replace the plastic fuel rail cover to the valve cover. Replace the + battery terminal wire to the battery and triple check the belt and all wiring. Replace the plastic panels that attach under the chassis and in the engine bay.


16) Lower the car off the jack stands.


17) Start it up! This should be it

Just thought I add, that you dont need to remove the alternator if you have an impact wrench, you can loosen the pulley nut, then remove the belt & pulley. I didn't find it necessary to remove the top engine cover, or disconnect any wiring. But only do this if you have an impact wrench, its got to be tight, and retighten after a few days.

YOu do realize that a crankshaft pulley without a harmonic balancer will slowly destroy your engine.. right? Just thought I'd add that so people don't go fudgin up their daily drivers without proper understanding. The harmonic balancer absorbs vibrations in the crankshaft, thus, keeping these vibrations from transfering to the rods, and finally, the pistons.. which will score the cylinder walls under such circumstances. The underdrive pulley is a mod that's really for racing aplications only. -Jason

Simple hand tools are all that is required for installation of Tru-Power pulleys. These include sockets, wrenches and Allen wrenches.

Why doesnt AEM make a crank pulley?
Virtually all of the cars AEM makes Tru-Power pulleys for come equipped with a vibration dampener mounted to the crank from the factory. Aftermarket crank pulleys require the removal of these dampeners, which are required for engine life. Their removal can cause damage to your engine over time. If the manufacturers could save on vehicle costs by eliminating this device they would have done so.

Will this upgrade cause my battery to die?
No. The effect of the Pulleys at idle is minimal. The only time there may be a problem is if there is a very high demand on the electrical above and beyond the stock design. This would include very high power sound systems or similar devices. Of course you should make sure the charging system of the car is in good condition.

Will Tru-Power pulleys void my new car warranty?
No they will not. The only time this can happen is if the pulleys are installed improperly and cause damage to the alternator or power steering pump. Are Tru-Power Pulleys emissions legal?
Yes. AEM Tru-Power Pulleys are 50 states legal. Because this is considered a replacement part there is no E.O. required.
