wow...after 25 years Toyota decides to pull the plug. No 8th Gen Celica - OFFICIAL WORD Toyota To Discontinue Production Of The Celica And MR2 Sports Cars By The End Of 2005 Model Year07/16/2004 Torrance, CA Toyota Motor Sales (TMS), U.S.A., Inc., today announced its plans to discontinue sales of the Celica and MR2 sports cars by the end of the 2005 model year. "The Celica and MR2 have been a favorite amongst sports car enthusiasts since their introductions in the U.S.," said Don Esmond, senior vice president and general manager of the Toyota Division. "The past few years, however, have been very challenging for both Celica and MR2 as competition in a segment where 'what's new' dominates and we continue to add more exciting and youthful products to the lineup such as the Matrix and Corolla XRS, Solara sports coupe and recently the Scion xA, xB and tC." Currently in its seventh generation, the Celica was first introduced in the U.S. in 1971 and was influential in establishing the sporty subcompact segment. Since that time it has been named Motor Trend's "Import Car of the Year," one of Car and Driver's "Ten Best Cars," and the "Most Reliable Sporty Car" by Consumer Reports. Based on the EX-1 "Car of the Future" concept vehicle, its styling was revolutionary when it first hit the market. The Celica was originally designed for consumers who were young at heart and wanted something more than just simple transportation. Toyota introduced the popular mid-engine, rear-wheel drive two-seater "Mr. Two" in 1985. The MR2 was on the market for ten years when production went on hiatus until 2000 when the third generation was introduced. The MR2 was developed to offer consumers exotic car design and excitement without the exotic car price. Originally powered by Toyota's "sweet sixteen" 16-valve dual-overhead cam 1.6-liter engine, a supercharged version was added in 1988. A Turbocharged version went on sale in 1991 prompting Car and Driver magazine to proclaim the MR2 Turbo as an exotic car for the rest of us." The current MR2 Spyder is the first U.S.-market Toyota to offer a true clutchless, six-speed sequential manual transmission. The MR2 has not only proven its mettle as a "budget exotic" sports car, but succeeded in attracting Performance-oriented buyers to the Toyota brand. It sucks, but, at the same time, I'm glad because a new one with a better engine would make the 7th gen resale value plummet.
Plus, I'd had to have an "older celica."
End of a great line of cars, I think Toyota is stupid for killing it in favor of lesser cars like XRS and tC.
Oh well.

Oh well, Maybe after a few years down the road they will do a retro comeback celica based on the 1st gen. Now that would be awesome.

I don't know why they didn't just put the revenue spent on those fucking Scions towards marketing the Celica. They gave up on the Celica years ago in my opinion. No one is gonna buy that under powered Scion coupe, and the one that looks like a fucking refridgerator on wheels. I think I'm gonna go with Subaru on my next vehicle purchase. Toyota can kiss my ass.

No more CELICA. Poeple here at work kinda like the new scions. I don't know why, they say "They are so cute." Even some guys are saying they are cute, but anyways, bad move by toyota and they will regret that they discontinued two of the greated cars.

Its too competitive of a market they say ... ... so they are taking their ball and going home. Next go around, it will be a Boxter-S for me; even though I don't like the fact that its a wanna be Porche. But I can't afford a GT2/3 so ...

its actually an honor for all you guys owning the last generation celica. but i think we should inform toyota for the made steps theyve been lately taking. maybe something like a petition, not telling them that we want celica back, just to let them know as "we, the young generation" dont love replacing supras, mr2s, and celicas with stupid scions. and also inform them about their bad decisions and that we will never buy toyota vehicles again.
yet in the end, its a good way to end a celica. the 7th gen looks like a mother fucker with a nice kit. hopefully they have more aftermarket parts soon. toyota is just giving up on creating good cars with extra speed, Turbo,... pussies.
btw, whoever said that parts will be harder to find for our cars since the car wont be produced: wrong. even a company stops making a certain car, they still make parts for it. toyota does make parts for older cars, unlike ford.

I bet that they will both come back in time. While they might discontinue production of the Celica and MR-S for a few years, they will make them again in the future. It happened with the MR2, they stopped production (at least in the US) and then reintroduced a new model a few years later.

oh well, i'm really not concerned about it. if my resale values go up then it's all good.
personally, the celica has NOT made me a fan of toyota--and i have no plans to ever purchase another toyota again at this time.
you can only stay behind the competition for so long before you finally wake up and realize that what your offering just doesn't cut it.
