Before you ask, no this isn't another "What turbo do I get?", or "I'M GONNA (NOT) TURBO, WHAT DO I NEED, AM I COOL YET?" threads. Here's my situation. I have the money to turbo (c2gas stage 1). It's a dream of mine to own a turbo car. I've been working for a year and have earned the money for the turbo in that year. Now, here's the main problem. I'm 17. I'm a senior in High-School. I still have a year left of school and work (with an upcoming raise) before college. My dad does not feel it a good idea to pour that much money into a car (no matter what the car). He suggests that I save the money, then later sell my Celica for something else, even though I tell him that I won't sell the car for quite some time. Anyway, he says that it's my money and I can do with it what I please. So, folks, do I turbo? If you had the money, would you turbo?

screw the turbo, college develops a lot of expesnses you should save as much as moeny as possible, and if ur living on ur own than thats even more expensses, dont worry once you graduate with ur degree and get ur career going you can turbo or buy whatever car you want, but dont get urself into too much debt... 4 years might sound like a long wait, but it goes by quickly thumbsup thumbsup

well it would be really nice to turbo, but if figure you have like around 5000 saved up. Im 17 too and If you plan to keep the car for a long time go for it, but if you might want some change to a nicer car, maybe save it. If i had that much i woould save it for a s2k in the future.

well, i make really good pay. i can save up enough to buy a second turbo in a year. Ammar, yes i'm aware that college does create lots of expenses, but if i bought the turbo, then i'd start saving from now on, which would include work money, christmas money, 18th birthday money, and graduation money. my parents have my first two years of college saved up, and i rarely spend any money (the most expensive thing i've bought in the past year was a used x-box), so i'll have enough money come college.

go with what you feel man! but the only thing id say is once you go turbo, the upkeep gets expensive! then after you feel the power your gonna wanna upgrade everything and thats exspensive also! but you have a great sense in money so IMO you should get the turbo if you are seriously into the celica! good luck in your descison! thumbsup

you've gotta ask yourself if you are willing to make a really long-term commitment with a turbo. Like tido said it gets really expensive and if you lose interest in your celica a couple years down the road you'll have basically wasted that money cause a turbo sure as hell won't up your resale value.

It's a huge investment and I'm not saying don't do it, just be sure you make the right choice for you.

good luck either way thumbsup

Turbo all the way. When you do get to college your probably not going to have the time to save up larger quantities of money, and when you have the opportunity you should take it. Im in college and if i never took a chance and just spent the money I would never get anything I want. The way I see it is its better to spend the money and get a turbo, then save it and see it widdle away on food and dvd's, and cd's, and other such junk that amounts to nothing.

college first, by then you'll probably ditch the celica and be able to afford something else better with stock turbo...

Everyone has to decide for themselves, but I decided it wasn't worth it. I've thought about getting a turbo, and could afford it, but it's just not worth $5,000. Here's how I looked at it...

PROS: car goes faster, car sounds cooler
CONS: $5000, lower gas milage, increased fuel cost, increased maintainance, and potential for problems

I decided the cons outweighed the pros. Now I'm thinking about nitrous, because it's a lot cheaper and less complicated, and should be easier on the engine if I only use a 50-75 shot and don't engage it all the time.

I agree with the opinion that the turbo should not be taken lightly. I would only turbo if you plan on racing your car, and that means having time to tune and race your car...and then maintain your car. College from my experience at Stanford is a 24/7 job and no break so if I had a turbo it would have been a waste.
Time in library > Time playing with car.
But then again if you don't plan to study much, it's your choice.

I just got back from a shop and asked them about price. First the guy told me that he won't do something like this for just anybody, expecially kids, because he doesn't want people to shop around for the cheapest price and get screwed on quality. He told me about a guy who wanted a supercharger installed on a Ford (didn't tell me what model), but it took 3 solid days to install. His rate is 88 dollers per hour. Anybody think this is decent?

The Toyota dealership rate in Pasadena is $70/hr. And in SoCal the prices are generally higher b/c of cost of living or the cost to lease land. Is he a master tuner or something? If not he should be less than the dealership and not more. Not that you would use the dealership, but what is their rate in IL?

1. VERY few girls find me attractive.
2. I'm 17, so I can't (and don't) drink (loser, I know).
3. Me and about 3 other friends will truly appreciate the turbo.

i dont think you really need a turbo..but it wud be nice to have one. after all its ur own money. personally i wud not throw on a turbo just yet. i wud prob put the 5k on my engine(ie intake, header, exhaust, sleeves, and all that shit to reenforce engine first. the w/ left overs make it look nice or save up for the turbo.
but then thats me. if you want a turbo go for it. and who cares if noone appriciates it. as long as ur happy..and girls..im not exactly..im not good looking at all..but it dun matter how you look its about confidence and shit..i dun have a girl yet..but its sure as hell fun to flirt with them thumbsup

SCREW THE TURBO (at least paying for it) Mod your car with some different pieces... See if C2 will sponsor you or if XS will. There are a few guys out there that are still willing to sponsor a ride. You get one sponsor then you can get the other ones for other upkeep pieces,,,

i was planning on streetglow as a sponsor, and figured the turbo would catch their attention. AznKhaos, if i bought i/h/e, it'd be a waste, because they wouldn't work with a turbo, and the only intake and exhaust i would buy would be the TPR ones, which aren't available yet. i got a new price quote on install (well not me, the guy told my mom when she went to pick her car up). it seems that he can guarantee a maximum of $500 per day, and he's guessing that it'd be about a day-and-a-half-ish, so roughly $750. I would spend the money on a body-kit, but i'd need rims first. if i bought rims first, i fear that the salt on the roads would eat up the new tires, and maybe damage the finish on the rim. i guess it'd have the same effect on a freshly painted body-kit.

you can do the install yourself with the stage 1 kit, you could spend that 750 dollars on tools that you'll have you're whole life, and c2gas will also help you go through the install for check ups. it would be better if you knew more about your turbo because you could trouble shoot problems and start tuning etc yourself instead of paying some dude to do it for you...which is a waste

well the guy that owns the shop that i'd go to would let me hang around for some of the install. i'm also pretty familiar with how a turbo works and what parts are involved. my parents, however, would never let me install it myself. they would rather make half the install a christmas gift, and i'm willing to let them.

I wouldn't try to install a turbo yourself. You gotta remember how many parts go into the installation, and how much these things have to be precisely lined up and tuned properly. Unless you have had experience with previous installations, I would pay a professional to do it. The best option, like you said, would be to sit in, watch and learn. As for whether to get it or not, I would get the turbo and promise yourself to make up the money elsewhere. In my opinion it would be cool to have a stock looking exterior and have a sleeper smile.

$88/hr is to much. most guys only make about $50/hr tops if they work on there own. Obvoiusly if you work at a dealer you make more cause they have more customers. shop around more. Thats a lot of money.
