There is a squeeling noise that comes from the engine around the area of the alternator, its not a loose belt cause the squeeling noise does not go away. It generally is really bad on cold days. I am thinking its a tensioner and prolly needs to be replaced. Any ideas people and how much it might cost to fix.

If toyota warranty doesn't cover it then try replacing the belt. I had that problem a few weeks ago. The car just started squeeling like crazy and it gets louder and louder. It's just like the brakes, the metal things on the pads start rubbing against the rotor or drum, telling you that it's time to change the pads. The same sort of thing happens with the belt, it tells you thit you need a new one. When I took my old belt there were little piecies of glass or something in it and the new one that I bought was clean on the inside. When the belt gets worn to a certain poin those glass things start to come out and they make that squeeling noise. I took a part every pulley and there were no signs of any of them rubbing against anything and the bearings were good. I thought it was the alternator, but the mechanics at a local garage told me that my alternator was OK. Finally went to the dealership, they wanted to charge me a $100 (canadian) for just an inspection + labour + the belt. I bought the belt for $20 (canadian) at a local automotive store. I'm pretty sure that they know what was squeeling. Last time I was at that dealership I heard two cars with the same problem, one was a solara and another was a camry.

If it's not covered under warranty, either try to change the belt by yourself or go to a good shop and have them do it, (it will be much cheaper) insted of going to the dealership.

I will check about the warranty cause I bought a extended warranty but they almost never cover anything. Also which belt would the noise be coming from the altenator belt?

hell i went to the dealer and told them about it, even ask them if they will cover under PowerTrain warranty and they WON'T, WILL NOT..so that's out..and they want to charge me $85 for inspection and the estimate for everything would range between 100-500 bucks..fuck that..they said it's depend on wat belt is making that sound and i have to leave the car with them overnight so the next day they could hear it..i never made the appointment..Yo Tido can you run to ur dealer and find out wat they say about it bro?? because if it's get really bad i'll just go to GoodYear and order the Gatorback belt and have them install it..don't know how much though..i'll have to check on that later..

I had my Belt Tensioner replaced under the Gold Extended Warranty.

The Timing Belt however is not covered. I had to purchase it seperately but labor was covered. I paid $140 bucks for the Serpentine Belt and the Belt Tensioner was replaced for free.

Just go there and act like you know what you are talking about. And if you have the warranty documentation. It states that Belt Tensioner is covered. It also states that the Timing Belt is not covered tho. But yeah, fight for the Belt Tensioner at least. Once that is done, the labor for replacing the Timing Belt should be free because they are disassembling that part of the car anyways.

Good luck.

Break the engine before it expires on you...j/k man.

Wait, doesn't it cover the Lift Bolts. Get that replaced by them before the warranty goes out.

its your belt, or maybe your tensioner. Mine did same thing, bought a GATORBACK belt for $20, changed it out in like 15 minutes...problem solved. (plus you get like 1 hp for using the gatorback rofl). Its not hard to change. Taking off the engine plastics is the hardest part, and thats not hard.

well i only had the car for like 2wks..then the fucking clutch burned out..i was pissed..they said the car pass inspection..bullshit..it didn't pass shit if you ask me, the car got condensation in the headlight (left) and they didn't even notice, they made up the excuse that the car wasn't driven a lot that's y it's like that..so i emailed toyota and gave them shit so the dealer paid half which is 500..so i bought the ACT street clutch and paid them 200, since the clutch is 300...i also got the used car sale manager in trouble and i didn't give a f*ck..the dude that sold me the car said i should apologize, i was like, ok ok..i never did, i said f*ck it..they don't deserve it..

I replaced mine yesterday, and it wasn't too tough. It helps to have a long 3/4 in. wrench to torque the tensioner (pull towards the front of the car to release tension). I also found it usefull to remove the cruise control actuator to give me some working room.

The hardest part for me was getting my arms down low enough in the engine compartment to weave the belt through the pulleys. If you have too much trouble with this, you can jack the car up, take off the front passenger wheel and wheel well to get at it from the side. Good luck.

This is true...you need to pull the tensioner towards the front to loosen the belt. It just slips off. I HIGHLY recommend taking off the wheel on the passenger side, and removing the underbody plastic on that side. It also helps to have a second person to help wih the tensioner while threading the belt through. I had my wife help me. Also i DIDN"T remove the wheel or under body plastic and it was very tough to get my hands down far enough to thread the belt. There is a guide somewhere here on the site, let me try to find it.

Go here and scroll towards the bottom and you'll see a belt diagram. You don't need the rest of the info, but the diagram is helpful. I couldn't find the article I was looking for, it may have been from another site. Anyway, this diagram should help

Its not called the timing belt; its called the serpentine belt. Celica's have a timing chain instead of a timing belt.
