So I do need a wild paint job to score well. That's going to be another year before I can afford that. I really want to get that new engine first. How about just adding some airbrush work like this guy? I love this paint job. I know it won't score as high as full custom paint will, but having some airbrush work would score a lot higher than just plain red would, right?

Thanks Steve, your post went in as I was writing mine. Thank you, but there is something about having stickers on my car that just drives me nuts. Yours looks good though. For me, even if I got a sponsor and had to put their name on my car, I would paint it on just so I don't have any stickers. I think I'm like that because I'm so picky with my paint. I wax the hell out of every inch of it.

Yes you would get a couple of paints for Airbrush, but not as much as a new color that doesn't come stock on the car originally

Thanks Jamey. Two more and I'll leave you alone for the night. Sounds like you're getting a little tired of all the questions. You must have been asked all this stuff a million times. Anyway, we all know that Audiobahn is pawn store crap, sorry if any of you own Audiobahn, I'm sure the higher end stuff is good, but even though it's crap, you see it in most show cars just because it's pretty. Now my amps and sub are about the ugliest things I have ever seen, but I paid about 7k for them and I think they are the best money can buy. Would I have got more points if I would have bought Audiobahn crap just because it's pretty or will the Zapco amps and Treo sub score higher because they are a much better product? Not counting the install, just the product.
Last question. If there are two cars and they have both scored the same in every area and the only thing left to judge is the overall appearance. The only difference between the two cars is, one of them is a Celica and the other is a Geo Metro. Who will score higher?
I know I have already bugged you about this, but I just don't understand how overall appearance is judged. Does it have anything to do with what kind of car it is?
A few months ago Mull and Laub were beat by a Viper. People say he won because it was a Viber and the other two are just a Civic and a Cavalier. I don't agree with this because that Viper would have been trick as hell even if it was a Geo Metro, but since it was a Viper, that just made it that much better. What do you think?
Okay. I'm done for the night.

combatc87, I'm not sure if you were just kidding with your question, but if you weren't, I would have to say no. People at HIN won't even slow down to look at a car that is not tricked the hell out. Too many trick cars to look at to take time to look at a beginner. I would look at your car though.

The viper you talking about the one that was Carbon Fiber'd out?? That viper was sick and deserved to win!!!!! Look at it this way, i/we don't care what the trim level or make of the car is. You could have a 1967 original GT500 Shelby next to a 2004 Chevy Aveo and the car that is more of a show car wins, plain and simple. We don't car what kind of car it is. To answer your next question when there is a tie between the score sheets we still don't look at what type of vehicle it is. There will be a group judges meeting and every judge will go and look at the 2 cars and come back with their input. The overall apperance isn't how the vehicle looks from factory it is all it looks modded, does the color scheme go togehter, does everything flow and not lets just slap has many mods as we can to get points. So let me say this again that WE DON'T CAR WHAT VEHICLE IT IS THAT YOU STARTED WITH THE BEST CAR WILL WIN

Thanks Jamey. Yeah the Viper with tons of carbon fiber is the one I'm talking about. I love that car. I wish I could find a picture of it to show these guys, but that was a while back. It's on one of the back pages of Car and Model.com. It would take forever to find it. But that thing was definitely not all show and no go. He has a ton of money into the whole car. With most of the money going to the engine I think. Sick. So what about the audio question? Got time to answer that one?

Oh sorry man, missed that one, The rarer the product the better you are and the more points you will get even if it doesn't flow very well. For example Takara (sp) 4 point harness only comes in bright Green, put is truly a JDM product only. If you are going with a Pink and Purple paint scheme and you have these bright green things on your seat i am not going to dock you points for that at all, hell you will get a couple of more points for that

Is that why everybody gets those damn things. I always wondered about that. See, now that's something I just can't do. No matter how bad I want points, there is no way I could put green harnesses in the middle of my black, red and gray interior. What if I got them and changed the color of them? Same points? That's why I bought TRD coilovers and not Tein. Couldn't put green on my car even if it would have meant more points. Maybe that's going to keep me from BOS someday, but atleast I will never look at my car and think "Damn that green looks out of place". Guess I'll just have to hope somebody agrees with my way of thinking. Or do you have rules you have to follow? Is there somebody that would say to you "Why the hell did you give this guy so many points for these crapy TRD coilovers?" That's one thing I don't like about the way car shows are. You have to get the most expensive part there is or you won't get as many points as the guy who spent more money than you, even if your car does look better. But I'm sure you have heard this complaint a million times too, huh?

Another thing I don't get is "The rarer the product, the more points you get". Right now I'm shopping for the best deal I can find on some black Racing Hart CR wheels. I have spent thousands of hours just to decide on this wheel and I really think it is the best looking wheel made. Now maybe there is a wheel in Japan somewhere that there was only 5 sets made, but they are ugly as shit, but if some guy next to me has it, he get's more points. I just don't get it.

how hard would it be for a car that is geared more toward performance to win a car show since i know air ride is bad for performance and good for show and bigger wheels are not good for performance-just a thought

Okay celicadragon, I think I know what you're asking. I would say that a car geared more toward performance has just as good of a chance to win a car show as anybody else. A good set of coilovers will get you as many, if not more points than a car with an air ride if the air ride is a cheap set up. As for the smaller wheels, the bigger the wheel, the more points you get, but more important than the size is quality of the product. A set 16" Volks will get you more points than a set of 19" Joe's bargain wheels. As long as your car has a lot of quality products on it and is very clean, you can win. Plus a performance engine will also get you a lot of points.
How did I do Jamey? I'm trying to take your job.

Jamey,
my room mate and i recently formed a collaboration of sorts. he has a 05 STi, and i have my 02 Celi GT. We have the money, and the means. we just aren't sure where to start. we want to show at least the Celi by the march Tuner Bash in DB. What show we do? who do we talk to? How do we get started into showing our cars? Thanks for the tips.

DaytonaCelica1, I'll try to answer you if you would like. To start showing your car, you just show up at a show you want to enter and pay the registration fee which is about $50. Or you can pre-register online. A good site to learn more about car shows is www.4ncca.com [ 4ncca.com] . There forums are down right now, but they are usually filled with good information. I'm sure you would rather have Jamey answer your question since he is a judge, but he has been busy for the past few days over in the "Anything goes" forum talking to the girls on this site about dildos and things like that. I'm not saying I blame him. Talking about cars ALL the time can get old. The only reason I think about cars more than girls now is because I'm old and married. If I was still young, I would be over there talking to the girls about dildos right along with him. Anyway, looks like we are on our own until he comes back over here. So if you guys don't mind, I'll do my best to find out the answers to your questions. Car shows is what I think about more than anything else. Here is a list car shows in your state http://www.carshownews.com/national/FL.htm or you can go to www.carandmodel.com [ carandmodel.com] which covers just about every big show there is. Hope this helps.

Damn, you are a jokester aren't you. I'm guessing that you have been in a fight or two with jokes like that. Not saying that I'm offended, but I think some newly married guys would get pretty upset at a joke like that. Anyway, the only picture I have here is this painting I had done of her next to my car and toys.

I am new to this site. just starting out in the car shows. i have only been in one car show. i hope that i don't ask the same question that someone else as already asked.
1. does a daily driver help out? 2. legally racing the car help (auto-x)? 3. i am working on a stock/costum look. stock sterio w/ dvd player, screens in the visors, and some day in the feture a custom 10inch box in the truck that will be under the trunk mat (the stock look). thats why i say a stock/custom look. does that score any pionts? i hope this make sence. thanks Steve

Hello STROBERSTEVE, welcome to ECelica. I'll give you my opinion and Jamey can correct me if I'm wrong.
1. No, it doesn't. I used to think it would too, but nobody cares. There can't be a daily driver class either because there is no way to prove it is a daily driver.
2. No, the fact that you race your car will not help your score at a car show. They only judge a car by how it looks and how good the quality of your parts are.
3. Having a custom sub box in the trunk will score you points if it is done well, but the fact that you will keep it looking stock will not score more points. They want to see something that grabs your eye, not something plain. Alot of "people" at the shows will like your idea because you will have a car that is still functional, but not the judges.
DaytonaCelica1, I'm guessing you don't want my opinion since you must not have liked the way I tried to answer your last question?

Yup, that's what I say too "Fuck'em if they can't take a joke", but a man's wife is one area I don't risk joking about. You never know when some crazy fuck with a gun will come find you. I have been threatened with death by a jealous husband with a gun just for talking to his wife before.

I mean are you going with a widebody kit or more of a bolt on??? What theme you looking to go with. The best thing to start with would be a bodykit, wheels, some type of suspension. Then start with the interior. Do you want to go full custom with a fiberglass daash, panels, trunk, no rear seat etc. If not do the little things to give you some points, ie painted the cluster bezel, racing seats, shift knob stereo, paint center console etc. To be honest the sky is the limit The best advise i would give to be honest is go to a couple shows and look at all the cars to get a feel of what route you would like to go, then start the design of your show car

LOL!!! Hell yes I am an outcast in Texas. I don't even have a big 4X4 pick-up with a gun rack in the back window.
I'm from Cali and I drive a little red Celica. People here say "What da hell are them there big tanks in your trunk that say NX on them? That propane or something? (As they spit chew on the ground).
As for the .50 cal, Now that is a fun gun to shoot. The .50 cal range is my favorite. Love to rip up the targets with that sucker.

Well, you're a better man than I am. I would have punched him in the mouth. I hate people like that, but I know what you must go through, I had to deal with all the people in my town looking at my girlfriend and I like we were from Mars just because she was black and I am white. Idiots.

Thanks Juan, You look familiar, did you go to show last year? What show is that in this picture? Looks like HIN Dallas.

Are there any points awarded for style? It seems everyone at these shows are always so out there and wild. But what about classy-ness? Thats what I plan on doing for my tC ... I want to give a luxurious look but still have it tricked out to hell and back if that makes sense. So are there any points awarded for that?

Sorry TimO, no points for style. There is one area that you will be judged on overall appearance, but wild is what wins shows. Sucks don't it?
Am I right Jamey?
