Celica Forums General Discussion General is double clutching harmful to your car?

Just curious because i do it all the time and my friend said that it can wear out my clutch.

define double clutching. I thought that was only a term they used way back in the day (when synchros weren't all that great) and in the movie fast and the furious. If what you mean by double clutching is not taking your foot off the gas in between shifts, this could put some serious wear on your clutch with repeated use, and probably is not too good for your transmission either.

well the way i do it is when i just release my foot from the gas and tap the clutch and gas again while on a gear. i dont think theres anything wrong with that right?

are you up shifting or downshifting? Double clutching is when your downshifing, and you press the clutch to get out of gear, you let out the clutch and give it gas to rev-match the gear your about to go in, then you press the clutch in and go into the lower gear. The F&F double clutching is referring to when you upshift you keep your foot on the gas, not a good idea cause your clutch has to slow the engine back down to the rpm it should be at in a higher gear, also it slows down your times, from what i've heard.

i dont shift while doing that. While im on a gear and flooring it, i quickly let go of the gas and tap the clutch and floor it again while on the same gear. For some reason it makes my rpm go higher from the time i tapped the clutch. I dont do the one from F&F. Its obviouse that it will wear out your clutch.

keeping your foot on the gas while shifting is speed shifting and it does add wear and tear a little.
when you pinch the clutch(foot in the tank and you tap the clutch,making you rpm go up)you do get faster,but it depends on the car/rpm/clutch.these "terms" are so out of whack and differ so much from perso to person that sometimes its confusing to figure out which ones are being refferd to.i do know that if you go to the track and you "double clutch" you will get some sought of heat or slick comment from somebody.

what if you make the rpm too high for the gear you're downshifting on? Will it go to the right rpm on it's own without lurch? Because i dont wanna have to be looking at my meters while trying that out.

If you're a beginner to either a normal downshift, a double clutch downshift, or a heel-toe downshift, then it's best to start off practicing by slipping the clutch a little bit. That way the lurch won't be that bad if you don't hit the revs perfectly. Eventually you'll be able to do it without slipping the clutch and without any lurch at all. (Nothing sounds more beautiful than a perfectly rev-matched downshift.)

I think that Isaac needs to put a filter on the forums to keep the term "double clutching" from being posted, unless it's by one of the members who has some idea what it means.
