Is there a way to take off the rust on top of the disk part of the brake. It looks nasty  .

go out and drive it for a couple of miles, the brake pads take it off. rust on the rotors is something that's going to occur on iron parts that have wear on them any time they get wet, and the rotors definately get wear on them.

Paint it with silver high-temp paint or just live with it.

Paint it with silver high-temp paint or just live with it. Whoa! I would never recommend painting over rust untill you get rid of it first. Try taking one of those wire brush things we all use on grills to see if you can scratch most of it off. Or you could try steel wool, just to get rid of it. Be careful, if you decide to paint it, try to make sure that no paint gets on the contact surface of the disc itself. If none of that works, then you could dish out a few pennies to pick up a set of aftermarket drilled and slotted rotors!

theres really nothign you can do on rotors...Buy new ones

you can't get it off.
Just buy new ones, $22/$18 for Brembo OEM rotors isn't worth getting old ones resurfaced/fixed
BTW, Eyger, if you paint the contact surface, the pads will rub it off the first time you stop.

I painted my brembo rotors right out of the box with hi temp black even so the hard drivin I do has cooked most of it off.
