How do you know if you hydrolocked or not? because I own a AEM CAI just got it installed like 1 month ago and I was driving in the freeway and hit this big puddle and not only that but the cars in front of me are like hitting the rain on the ground and then going to my car. I just want to know if I hydrolocked or not? I live in LA CA and there has been no sign of a check engine light yet.

Just want your guys advice/ suggestion

if you hydrolock you wont be able to rev your engine past about 3000 rpms...

you would definatly know something is wrong.

You Engine would most likly stall and die as soon as the water hit the combustion chamber. Nasty rebuild after that.

If you are that worried about it, get a bypass valve for 30 bucks to play it safe.

And next time, stay away from them puddles. =P

well not to long ago i hit a puddle pretty hard angry. Had hella water in my intake. Car stopped, pulled over popped the hood, got some tools, took off my front bumper, took out my intake, pourred the water out, aired out everything, put everything back together and went on my way. Time 1 hour, cuts and brusies 4 (it was dark).. idunno

it's coming down pretty hard here in SoCal... I decided that 12 midnight would be the best time to check out the aerodynamics of my Celica and it's new body kit with unnecessary oversided spoiler and outrageous sounding exhaust system, along with my intake and window stickers (30+ extra HP, right?)

Anyways - while "drifting" through the missive puddles here in SoCal at 12 midnight, I had absolutely no problems... except for a civic with unpainted kit that came up to me... but I knew I was no match for him and his indiglo gauges, so I let him pass (he had more gauges than I had... and mine is only for voltage)

anyways - back to the story, after about an hour of driving around town with my uber-fine car and a freshly brewed paper-cup of America's best (starbucks coffee)... I decided that racing in the rain wasn't all its cracked up to be - so I went home.

Oh yeah... no hydrolock either thumbsup

Yeah, I'm loving this rain out here. We never get ANYTHING that lasts more than 12 hours... this time it's supposed to go all the way through Wednesday thumbsup

I love the rain, not only because I can "drift" through puddles, but also because I can actually spin the tires off the line with my auto. rofl

Watch out on the 134 W going to the 5 N/S. That area is usually flooded when it rains, so I would be a little worried when you pass through that area if you have a CAI.

Exactly, I used to think as many did that just going through the rain would hydrolock your engine. Now thanks to ecelica, I know this isnt the case. Even though northwest PA gets hella rain, I think i'll still put a CAI (not short ram) on my celica when I get it. thumbsup

DO NOT by the bypass valve, it does absolutly nothing for the celica because the intake pipe for a celica isnt long enough in the straight part for the bypass valve to quickly think of stopping the water from coming up

your best bet is to put tape on the slits plastics of the wheel well right in front of the filter

I dont think any1 should worry about hydrolock with a cai.I ran through a big puddle wit my stock intake box and hydrolocked, but I knew i was screwed because 1 of my connecting rods went bye-bye, so I just dropped in a new engine.

hey instead of worring bout stupid puddles just get a short ram intake...that way peeps dont worry bout slurping up water...i just got an injen intake with a heat shield last week...and seriously the temperature differences isnt that much thumbsup

SRI -> dont expect instant acceleration in hot season

When I first drove in the rain w/my CAI I drove like a little school girl going out on her first date with a football player and his 13" package (if that makes any sense). After that I plow through the rain and puddles with common sense of course. There's nothing to worry about. It doesn't matter if you drive slow or fast either in the rain. There's enough suction just starting your car with a CAI to hydrolock if submerged in water. Sorry about the sexual references.

doesn't borla sell a tube type thingy that directs cold air to the short ram intake??? i saw this on my friends focus but i dont think they have one for the celi yet

You just got yourself a SRI buyer for the rainy season. grin BTW. I just got my red K&N CAI, brand new for $100! Not sure what the gains are tho, since I can no longer find the dyno sheets on the K&N website. We'll see how it goes next week when I get it installed by a friend. I don't have any tools (or the time) to do it myself. frown

yeah it rained a lot here in the valley...went through a lot of deep puddles...but after looking at it, if i did had a CAI i wouldn't have had any problems...i just have better peiev of mind i have a SRI...,.cuz, sh*t happens..lol rofl

Bypass valves are expensive and worthless. Unless you plan on going off road, or driving across rivers in your Celica, money would be better spent on some stickers to incress horsepower.

what happens when your car gets buried in slow and ice/snow forms in your intake... I'm guessing that a $35 bypass valve would be great to filter that water to the foam, rather than directly into the $$$ engine spineyes

I just drove in the rain today (pouring badly) nothing happened besides my filter just being wet from possibly water splashing on it.

Is it bad if my filter is wet?

Haha...as experience would have it, my car's been buried in the snow. The only flaw in your statement is that snow comes down from above...so your hood is actually protecting the CAI. Nothing could get into the intake. spineyes

Now if you used your Celi as a plow...you may have a problem. grin wave

As far as I know, its okay for it to be wet. I think the only time you can run into a problem is when your filter is completely submerged in water...then the only thing it can suck in is water. smile

haha i can't find any spot on the pipe that i can put the by pass, and also, if rain out there, i will just put a plastic bag on the spot that the filter and the wheel at, so no water can touch my filter!!

Well from what I understand is for your car to hydrolock you would have to completely submerge the filter of the intake hitting puddles and cars putting water on your car shouldnt put it into hydrolock key word submerged.

it had a cai on it with a much bigger engine (v6) and i went thru puddles that were close to the filter (car was inch off ground) and i never had proplem... so like i siad before
