Alright guys, just got my car saturday, and looking to get my sound system. Before I quit my job in November I saved up 800 dollars for it. So ive got that to spend, but not sure what I need for a good system. Im getting a pioneer head unit running about 170. Heh so what else do I need, im guessing 2 12"s maybe, an amp, and some 6x9s? Yeah ive got no clue, so help is welcome.
I would get ur headunit 170 2 12' JL W0's 100 a piece Box 150 And a moderate amp. The Wo's run off low power so dont worry about the 1000 watt amps. Just a 400 or 500 watt amp. So probably 250.
That totals about 770. Dont worry about speakers. When you put your headunit in it will change everything and give you some more power out of em. With the install and wires you lookin at about around 850.
Spyder- Thanks a lot man...that sounds awesome. Also are the JLs better than Rockford Fosgates??
JL and Rockfords both have a very good rep. These are the economy subs of JL you are buying. Dont worry though they still pack a punch. I am personally getting this same subs. But as far as reliability they can last a long time. I recommend a box with some kind of grill or covering so you dont accidently hit them
**You listen to CKY? They are awesome and really cool i met them at their concert and they talked about all the crazy shit they have done with Bam and them for like 2 hours. It was awesome.
Alright man thanks a lot for the help, this is the set up ill probably be getting then. Oh also, 2 you recomend both speakers in the same box, or 2 seperate boxes. Thanks a lot for the help!
And yes CKY is a great band, thats awesome man, haha meeting them would be wild. Your very lucky!
Alright, heh ran into somthing else. I was planning on getting all this and having it installed at Best Buy, but they dont sell JLs. Where can I pick these up?
hey..best buy is cool for normal jobs, but i wouldnt go there for custom work, in your case get a box that is chambered which means there is a divider inside the box which allows for each sub to have its own airspace, jl audio is a better sub than rockford especially for listining to a wide range of music...if you have any question let me know...i sell and install car audio
This is a good setup you can get at Circuit City...it's what I'm running and it sounds great. Kenwood head unit (not sure of model number)$250 2 Alpine Type E 12's-$130 700 watt mono Alpine amp-$200 1 Farad audiopipe digital capacitor-$90 prefab box-$80 wiring-$30 $780 total
I have not done the stereo in my celica yet however from past experience the head unit is the least needed thing, if you wnt it for looks ok but thats where it ends.
To do the stereo right you want to have everything running through amps, clean power is what you get when you do this.
My suggestion is to forget the head unit stick with stock because its really just a tuner and cd player. Buy two amps
1. Four channel to run the four speakers inside the car.(which should be replaced) 2. One single channel amp in a celica its my opinion that one twelve will be sufficient.(this amp will run the one twelve)
And don't take my word for it call any high end sound store and they will tell you the same. Remember these places that sell these products can sell more if you think you need a new head unit.
Well im also gonna get the head unit for the mp3 playing ability. The headunit is supposed to help out some though isnt it? And do you guys think I will be good for now not replacing the speakers already in there, just going with 2 12"s, head unit, and amp?
whoa whoa... Any audiophile will tell you that an aftermarket head unit will sound a LOT better than the stock. You have many factors to think of...primarily the fact that aftermarket head units are made to build systems on!! Does your stock head unit have 4 volt preamp outputs? No, you have to splice into the speaker wire...you lose decible ratings and sound quality. Not to mention that most aftermarket head units have built in subwoofer levels, frequencies, and certain types of "bass boost" or "Media Xpander". Your stock has 4 options...bass, treble, fade, and balance. Then your aftermarket has your remote turn on for your amp. You have to splice into the ignition if you are using a stock receiver. Then not to mention that you have to waste money on a converter to plug your RCA cables into the amp...a waste if you are gonna buy an aftermarket eventually. The head unit is the first and most important piece of a good audio system!

As previously mentioned, if you buy amps for your front and rear speakers as well as sub, your receiver will be a stand alone unit. My suggestion is to disconnect the rear's completely, get a premium set of front components (like JL XR's or ZR's), and run them through a 300/2 amp. Then get a good sub in a ported enclosure (JL 10w7 or 12w7) and put a 1000/1 on it. This will most likely be out of your price range however the audio quality would be phenomenal.
-imo the rear's just degrade sound quality in the celica cabin (too much interference)
haha this is way harder than I had thought, I finally figured out my set up, then everyone tells me different stuff that works out better, now im back to not knowing.

There will always be people with different opinions. In the end you have to make the final call. Maybe it would be best for you to go to a local shop and ask questions to a real person.
yeah, okay I was just told that I might want to spend more on a head unit, should I spend some extra cash on the headunit and get one with some more features or should I be fine with my $170 one?

depends on how far you plan to go with your system. If you just want a decent sounding system for everyday use you are mostly likely fine. If you are planning on going major with this thing step up the headunit a little bit.
Yeah im not going for comp or anything like that, so ill just stick with my head unit I alredy picked out. Now back to the speakers, I was going for the 2 JL 12" w0s, but is it better to have them or just 1 more powerfull sub? And I was looking at amps and there are all different kinds...2 channel, 4 channel, all kinds, which should I go with there? lol damn this would be way easier if I knew stuff
