A couple days ago I got a rock chip in my windshield. It's not the "star" pattern, but it's definitely noticeable. I thought "Ok I might be able to live with that"
Then today I noticed that in a completely unrelated area of the windshield, a crack has started at the bottom, dead center passenger side, and runs up at and angle towards the middle... it's about 6 or 7 inches long.
What do I do? Replace it? Is it repairable?

At 6+ inches, it's probably not repairable, sorry. The sooner you get it taken care of, the better.
But there is GOOD news! Many insurance companies (mine included) will waive the deductible when fixing a broken windshield. They'd rather have to pay for your windshield than pay for the aftermath of a terrible accident that you got into because you couldn't see or because your windshield shattered.

So I should call my insurance company then and ask them what they can do to help with it?

So I should call my insurance company then and ask them what they can do to help with it? Yep, and then if they tell you that it's going to cost a lot, you can always just tell them you'll fix it yourself and you won't have to pay a deductible (just the actual cost of having a shop fix it).

depends how much your deductible is
the winshield will cost, should cost no more than 600 for part, labor, and everything

Dammit! I called the insurance company and I have a $1000 deductable, so the lady said I'd probably have to pay for it all out of pocket. Gee maybe I should change insurance companies... Not only is the deductable stupid high, I pay $1000 every 6 months for insurance.

6 or 7 inches is repairable...you can go to an autoshop or tint shop and they can put a compound in it.
NOTE: it will be repaired (won't crack anymore) but the crack will still be noticeable. also, depending on the location & severity..you may not be able to get a new braketag next time inspection comes up.

Yep, looks like you're gonna pay out of pocket. That sucks You could always lower your deductible, but then you'll pay even more monthly. You're probably better off in the long run with a higher deductible. Just know that, in the end, the insurance companies will always come out ahead

Wow, I'm surprised they can fix it once it's reached that length. Good to know But I don't think it'll impair his vision too much, considering the location: Then today I noticed that in a completely unrelated area of the windshield, a crack has started at the bottom, dead center passenger side, and runs up at and angle towards the middle... it's about 6 or 7 inches long.

Ok so I'm a spoiled brat (at 28 yrs old!) I called my mom (who is a purchasing manager at a company) and she said they have a company account with some windshield repair place (they fix all the company cars, etc). She said we can probably "sneak in" payment for a new windshield from the company. Woohoo! It's not uncommon for my mom's company to pay for my auto repairs... after all, my step-dad OWNS the company hehe. So it's all good

if the crack was not related to the rock incident it may be covered under your warranty. my sister's 01 corolla had a crack that started right in the center and went up about 6 inches and the dealer said they would fix it under warranty since it wasn't caused by rock chips, etc.

Hmm that's interesting. Perhaps I should call my Toyota dealer then. Would be nice to get it replaced for free It definitely looks like there's not any impact reason for the crack to be there.

6 or 7 inches?
I was told by the shop that fixed my winshield that it's only if the crack was no bigger than a quarter

I was told by the shop that fixed my winshield that it's only if the crack was no bigger than a quarter it had to do with the design or something, bad structural integrity or some BS like that.. but she got her window replaced and when i drove it home from the dealer, it was like there was no glass at all!! so clean and CLEAR!

Then, about two weeks later, after it was fixed, they threw a big f'ing rock through it.

Instead of buying so many windshields, you should get a video camera. but a thrown rock (and definately a shot from a slingshot) would most likely be out of range for a video camera, and therefore impractical. now if they were using a bat or some other close range object..THEN a camera would be more practical. but not in this case.

drop that shit, get the new light weight "glass" its made of lexan plastic and its what they use in race cars, its much lighter then stock glass, and it requires no care, in some cases you dont even need windsheild wipers, because it sheds water so well...
