WHP=Wheel Horse Power, as opposed to BHP=Brake Horse Power, or power at the crankshaft

whp= wheel horsepower, power directly from the wheels after it goes through the drive train.
hp= horsepower, usually measured at the flywheel/crankshaft before it goes through the drive train.
bhp= base horse power, same thing as hp. it's the horsepower #'s stock from the factory

"Brake Horsepower-The Actual amount of power delivered to the crankshaft is called brake horsepower. One way to determine Brake Horsepower is to subtract an engine's friction horsepower from it's indicated horsepower. In practice, the measurment of an engines brake horsepower involves the measurement of a quantity known as torque, or twisting moment."

wait a second...are people still saying BHP is NOT brake horse power? Car companies might "dumb it down" a bit for the consumer, but it is still technically called Brake Horse Power, measured with a Hydraulic or Electric dynometer. I was always taught in college that Brake Horse Power-Friction Losses=Wheel horse Power. I got three text books sitting in my lap (thats where above quote came from) that say BHP=Brake Horse Power. Where are people getting this "Base Horse Power"?
If you are really interested, its called brake horse power because at the test fascility they used to attach a "Prony Brake Dynameter" to the crankshaft, which was hooked to a long bar, which rested on a scale. The more horsepower, the higher the weight reading on the scale.
