Ported and Bandpass boxes produce longer basslines with more boom to it. For music such as rap, this is great. Sealed boxes produce tigher, quicker basslines in general. This is generally considered better for rock, techno, and similar music.
I'm just a crosshair I'm just a shot away from you
Um...it also matters on the type of space your putting the speakers into. If its a large open area, say...the back of an SUV...your gonna want ported boxes/bandpass. Sealed for the trunks of a car.
I put 2 12" subs in a bandpass box in my Buick once...gah...sounded SOOOOO bad.
not to change the subject or anything but how come nobody likes bass tubes. I currently have a 12 audiobahn tube in my trunk and it sounds very clean. How come nobody else considers them.
I tend to see this different than some. Ported yeilds greater output, At a cost. Its not always sound quality. IMO it depends on the speaker. Some subs won't like a sealed box while others can't be put in anything else. Bandpass, unless its built specifically for the woofer and is of good quality build its gonna suck. No premade bandpass is going to yeild good sound quality IMO. Music material doesn't matter either. I listen to Rap, hard rock, classic rock and I have yet to find a box that made my music sound bad. It all depends on the enclosure. If your referring to any prefab box then forget it. Those boxes aren't even worth considering. With the right design my ported boxes have outdone my sealed in sound quality everytime, for rap, rock or whatever. It all depends on the design. Sorry for being extremely general but I hope it made things a little clearer...
What's the sound difference with a ported vs non-ported sub box?
oh and to answer your question, sealed tends to have better freq range because of the fact that its not a tuned enclosure, ported will go just as "low" but with a small loss in output usually. Ported only will sound boomy when the box is wrong or tuned wrong, that is if your tunign for sq. I enjoy loud bass so most of my ported boxes would have a 9-11db peak at my cars res freq...
ok ported boxes have a bass increase of 3db at the tuned frequency. which is in effect like doubling the power. but normally they can not reproduce sounds as low in frequency as a sealed. also, a ported box allows the woofer to travel farther through it's stroke, allowing more distortion for quick musical transients. so sealed would be a tighter bass note. sealed also uses less space. pioneer had a sub that would work in a 7ft airspace sealed, it needed 13ft for a ported enclosure.
as far as bass tubes. i have one in my car, and it is fine for me now. not too overpowering, but nice bass presence. i have had a custom bandpass box with 2 lanzar pro 12" that you could not stand to turn it all the way up while sitting in the car, and it only used 50 watts. it was funny when i worked at the car audio shop and these people had this notion that because i was 26 and was white that i could not have a loud car, but they were like shit, when they got in lol. was funny i laughed every time
