Celica Forums General Discussion General finally happened to me! got pulled over for TRD exhaust!

last night after picking up my trd struts out of warranty i decided to take the freeway home (118/405). well before merging to another freeway i was pulled over. he did the whole bit about my exhaust being modified and it was too loud so i gave him the certificate explaining that the exhaust complies with all sound laws and is 50-state emissions legal. of course for some reason he doesn't buy it and gave me a ticket for a "loud" exhaust. he says that i need to go to a state referee to asses the sound and if it is okay he can write off the ticket...no harm no foul. i have called everywhere to find out where this state referee is and i can't find one!!!...just pisses me off policemen abuse their power like that, are ignorant, and try to be a dick just to make quota. i even gave him write up's of alphasubzero's violation codes that plainly says my exhaust was legal...bastards

what you got to do is go to court and bring the papers to the court house( in the city where the ticket was given to you) that says that your exhaust is legal.. You will plea not guilty..Then you will have to go to court again which will be the state court i believe they will make you go to local emssions station to get it tested and then go back to back to the court and show them that you passed... HASLE.. but keep in mind just because ur muffler says it legal. that dont mean that you chould have taking your cat out ,modded your cat ect.. not the cops fault for not believeing you, but his a fag for pulling you over on the freeway , i would understand if it was in the city,, sorry bro

well it shouldn't be too bad...i just made an appointement with the state referee. they'l measure the sound...if it doesn't pass the sound then i'm going to bitch at trd for false advertising...this is such a hassle.

the policeman says i don't have to appear in court if the state referee signs off on the ticket saying it's below 95db...

It happened to me the 2nd day that I had the TRD exhaust installed. I was on the 605 going South. I showed the "chippy" my certificate and he let me go.

well let us know what happens wit the referee how much are you paying for it? are they gonna give you a certificate to show that IT IS state db legal for future use? if so let me know where the place is maybe i should go there too just to show proof that my tsrm is also sound db legal

and that's how it should have went...but this cop was being a picky bitch. if i pass the state referee i give my results (or mail them) to the judge and everything is cool. if for some reason it doesn't pass the db level then i'll be bitching at TRD/toyota and have them pay for all the fines.

the sad thing is that i wasn't accelerating fast and kept my rpms low...i was merging to the 405 going 60...not speeding at all. so he sees an asian kid in a sporty car and thinks..."hmmmmmm i drive a piece of shit car at home, let's see if i can teach this little kid a lesson and be a dick and i'll be doing my quota a favor"...great to know my tax dollars at work.

DAMN...glad I'm not in cali (for that reason anyway), sorry to hear about the cops being lazy over there...I'm thinking about getting Kazuma...I live in ATL, GA, and we have the "good 'ol boy patrol" which don't give a damn about the noise unless you're being aggressive, or hauling ass, or driving at 5K rpm through a neighborhood or churchzone...sorry to hear about that bro...

it's on the ticket ...first thing to do after i get this state referee thing all sqaured off so there is no doubt that what i have is tottaly leagal. then i'm going to be sending his superiors a nasty-gram...

Modified exhausts are completely legal as of 2001, the only thing is though it can't exceed 95db. Which from what I hear is pretty damn loud!

You can have a 10 inch tip there if you wanted to as long as it is NOT harmful to other drivers, etc... but you get my point.

The key here is to prove it to officer before he writes the ticket or you will have to go to court and prove it to the judge. Big hassle.

so, just because the officer GUESSES that your exhaust is too loud, based on using his own ears, across the street and in his patrol car with the windows rolled up and the police radio turned on... he is going to be correct?

Last time I checked, the patrol cars didn't have sound level checking devices on them. But also, in California you are ALWAYS GUILTY until you can prove yourself innocent.

The key is not go get the ticket in the first place. The only way to do that is to convince the Officer not to write one. That means you have to education him/her on the violation in question.

In the case of the exhaust, even if the law says 95db is the limit, I don't think any officer can tell you precisely what db each exhaust is giving out. Therefore, he/she have to rely on common sense and experience.

no ticket=no need to go to court=no need to take time off=no hassle.

yeah i had all the documentation with me about the certain sections and noise decible information...he just brushed me off like a was a little kid. i guess i was just at the wrong place, at the wrong time, with the wrong cop.

my friend has a thermal reaserch 3' cat back exhaust on his eclipse and he got pulled over for it. He had all that documentation on the 50 state emmisons legal also and the cop wouldnt except it, so he took it to court with him and they didnt except it either.

yup...i hear people going to court with all documentation and still LOSE!!!...is that f'ed up or what?? well hopefully for me the state referee gives me a fair test and reads the exhaust at below 95db...then it's over-with..

i have the TRD exhaust as well and i was wondering for you that have the TRD where you guys got your certificates? I bought it and had it installed at my local toyota and they never gave me anything like that.

whoa that sucks CT, i have the TRD exhaust with a removed resonator, so yeah that certificate is ALL that i have to prove my innocence, if i get that ticket i'm screwed.

Was there anyway you could get out of it? Or did you?

Cops are probably too scared to chase drug dealers, so they just hand out tickets to celica drivers.. awesome

if you go to a state referee and make an appointment that shows your car is below 95db...they'll give you a card or something to show next time you get pulled over...for Jay...you can contact TRD and they'll give you one. make sure you have reciepts, product #'s etc...basically you're not "screwed" but it's so much hassle go though procedures YOU DON'T HAVE TO IN THE FIRST PLACE!!

I would love to know what kind of exhaust I have on my car, Its a stock tip, but like a 3.5 inch pipe the whole way back welded to the stock tip. Its loud as hell and sounds awesome, but I just dont now what it is... Benn pulled 4 times for it, no tickets yet tho

show us a pic but it sounds like a custom straight pipe with a stock tip which i believe would be illegal (like the kazuma) do you know if you still have the cat?

Check this out. I had the Kazuma for a while on my 2001 GT and in my neighborhood there is a Hi Po next door to me, the chief of city police a couple of houses down, and a town cop on the other side of me. I would rev it up just to piss them off. Luckily I never got pulled over for it. I just traded it for the normal TRD exhaust becuase I could not listen to my own self think when I was driving down the highway.
