Its a big no-risk can't lose racket if you're the insurance company.
Yeah, but it's not a rip off when the other person hits you and is insured. If they don't have insurance, it's a pain in the ass getting the money from them.

Oh, and you didn't hear it from me, but you might profit by deflating those rear tires, and having insurance pay for new ones.

At least, that's what I hear. smile

I thought the back tires were just kinda hanging there???

Edit...Yeah...I was right. laughsilly Check out how the wheels are attached.
Right. On Celicas, we only have an axle in the front because that's where the power is applied to the wheels.

Yeah, a couple years back my dad was on the way home from work, and a drunk driver pulling out of Bo-Rocks (local bar) smacked right into his truck, spun him around. My dad caught up too the guy and saw a trucker (one of my dads friends) and told him too call the police...come too find out this was the guys 3rd DUI, and he had no insurance. The guys parol officer made sure he paid every month though.

Well, just spoke to the appraiser and he said he has to look at it tomorrow, but what they will do is take the low blue book value of the car, which is around $17.5k for private sell and $15.5k for trade-in and see if the total cost to repair is more than that. I doubt it will cost $17.5k to replace the rear left, suspension, fuel tank and stem, and tires/rims. He also said all the reinforcement parts back there needs to be redone. I hope it costs more than $17.5k because I don't want to drive a half broken car around that I won't be able to sell for much later on, but I doubt it will. The crappy thing about it is that I'm still making payments on the car, so it's like paying for the next 4 years $300/month for a messed up car...anyone know how much I'd be able to sell it for after it's fixed?

i think depending on the state... if the frame is bent or the air bags are blown they WILL total it... no matter how bad the damage is... my celica was wrecked.. it's a 2000 GTS and had 25,000 miles on it... it had been hit in the front passenger wheel.. and the hood wasn't even bent on it.. the frame wasn't bent.. nothing... it just needed a new wheel, tire, fender, headlight, and air bags... and we had to straighten the piece that goes around the headlight... that's IT.. and they totalled that thing out.. so the only thing i can figure is that they totalled it because the air bags were blown... it was a $16,000-$17,000 car (or so).. and i got it DIRT cheap... DIRT CHEAP.. thank God for wrecked cars

Your tie rods were most likely bent or broken, not to mention your axle. To reinstall air bags, there's a couple thousand.

The car's damage had to exceed the car's value. And as stated above, they will take the lowest assessed value of the car.

no they weren't bent or broken.. seriously... it wasn't hit that hard... my dad laughed when he saw the car... air bags from the factory are $1800... the fender was like $245... the headlight would be like $300 or something... the tire $100 or so... and i don't know what the rim would be... but all in all it's about $3000 or so of damage on a $16,000 car... (my dad's a car dealer/mechanic.. he couldn't figure out why they totalled it either... he said it had to be the air bags)
