I was just talking about cars with my friend who has a 96 Z28. He told me that he has "an idea". I knew that was bad.

He is apparently going to try to use a nitrous-style setup, except his will be injecting... get this... propane. His reasoning is that propane is cheaper and does the same thing. I tried explaining that nitrous isnt a flammable gas| but he actually told me that they said it was on Fast and Furious. ::slaps head::

I just pray hes not smart enough to find a way to hook this up.

um... propane injection WORKS!

on diesel engines anyway... it's gonna be BAD on a gasoline engine though... I would advise him not to do it, unless he doesn't mind turning his engine into an expensive grenade.

the engine wont necessarily blow, but it will definately lessen the lifespan...

the last person that i knew that tried propane injection on a gasoline engine ended up with third degree burns when his engine literally exploded, and started his car on fire while he was driving it.

I saw that on tv...told my friend that has a truck and told me I was full of shit...I made sure he was over when they had a rerun and told him 'gee...didnt i tell you that too?'...he also though the 'new hemi' had more power then the old muscle car ones. thumbsup

OK heres the truth about engines that run on propane...

Injecting propane will not be the same as NOS, Propane actually burns the same as gasoline only a lot cleaner.

The next time you see one of yer local natural gas company trucks check it out its prolly running on propane, Same goes for forklifts and busses, airport support vehicles, etc.

Back in the 80's propane costed about 1/2 as much as gasoline and many companies with fleet trucks converted over to propane as did some average joe consumers.

The only way this guy is gonna blow up is if he does a leaky mickey mouse install and somehow gets a spark to it.

If it werks he will get no hp gain just cleaner engine.

That makes me feel slightly better. Although, he is planning on hooking it up to spray into the Intake system... so there's a pretty good chance of a leak under the hood. rolleyes

exhaust from forklifts smells oddly good eek

I'd have to watch this guy when he starts that sh*t up.. but from safely behind a brick wall.

Little off topic: I have heard people say No2 is flammable and people say it isn't. From what I know its not but they like to show it exploding in movies all the time. I was actually watching I think it was 3rd Watch or something. There was a car wreck and some NOS bottles blew while this EMT was working on the hood of the car.. She was trying to get this other person unstuck from another car. Anyway the bottles blew and she hit the ground a little burned.. and then a few seconds later you see her legs hit the ground next to her head.. I was like eek eek eek I did not see that coming.

I cannot stand the smell of exhaust from something that burn propane. I learned standard on a forklift and drove it before I had a license. No matter how many times I've dealt with the exhaust smell or smell of propane itself I hate it. I love the smell of gas though. My dad once rebuilt a really old forklift, like 60's era, and basically from what he said, propane is a very clean burning fuel.

Give him a match and a bucket O' gasoline! Then tell him to dump a little on his balls, light the match, and see what injecting Propane into the fuel mix will do!!!

Propane is awsome on diesel engines, no idea about gasoline. And the only propane I remember in context with 2 Fast 2 Furious was a behind the scenes shot, and it was the pink S2000 with two propane tanks and they were hooked up to the exhaust so it would shoot those massive flames out (I guess it was a lot easier than getting one of those flame-throwing modding kits you can buy for your car.)

But as everyone says, sounds like a bad idea.

What the hell are you guys talking about?

Here (Belgium), nearly every gasoline engine runs on propane. It isn't harmfull for the engine. It is much cheaper then gasoline. It's cleaner for the environment. We get money from the state (700$) if we do the conversion. And use a safetyvalve to prevent blowing shit up. It can improve Performance with decent programming, but it is not much (2-5 hp), but it is actually less energetic then gasoline.
In Diesel engines it also does improve Performance. But so does adding gasoline with the diesel.

um, just some obvious obseravation & questions about your post:

1. you say nearly every GASOLINE engine runs on propane, and then you say propane is much cheaper than gasoline? i think i know what you meant to say, but the way you say it makes it sound like you use propane instead of gasoline, instead of propane being a supplement to the gasoline.

anyway, 50% of cars sold in europe run on diesel fuel (yay--good for the environment--whatever rolleyes) and the other 50% run on gasoline (how many are aided by propane i don't know)

2. how can propane be 'less energetic' but cause a Performance increase?

Sorry, I explained it wrong. I am still learning english. Propane NEEDS more energy before it "explodes". More then gasoline does. But if propane burns if gives more energy (50MJ/kg). Gasoline --> 43MJ/kg. And in most situations the engine produces less hp burning on propane then it does with gasoline. BUT now there are new installations that produce more hp with propane then with Gasoline.

Yes, propane is used to replace gasoline. But if it works like this, there shouldn't be a problem with it using it like nitrous oxide if you use a backdraft valve (hope this is the correct word for it). But it won't increase Performance I think.

And diesel engines are more common then gasoline engines more than 50%. Diesel engines produce much LESS CO2 so it is actually better for the environment. They have diesel catalysators now. And in the list of most environment friendly cars the smaller diesel engines or on top, at the same level as the toyo prius. And if you choose one of those cars you get like 5000 dollars of discount on taxes.

^^ here in the states their trying to make a new push for diesel because of the increased fuel mileagle.

vw has a diesel car available, and they are releasing a v10 touareg soon. there are about 5 other CARS here that are offered with diesel fuel (obviously not a lot) large consumer trucks have always used diesel here because torque is so much easier to come by with diesel fuel. (and of course almost all commericial trucks use diesel as well).

and your english is almost perfect (better than most americans--at least the brits will get a laugh)...i would have thought it was your first langauge. if thats the most you mess up, you won't have a problem the rest of your life thumbsup

i'm taking spanish puke but theres tons of hispanics in my area because i'm near mexico and many latin countries...plus my girlfriend is honduran and some of her family doesnt speak any english whatsoever (except hi, bye).

anyway, i'm off topic grin

i wouldnt do it, personally.

PROPANE CONTAINS NO OXYGEN!!! nitrous oxide works because it introduces more oxygen into the combustion chamber which in turn allows you to burn more fuel. nitrous dosent give you power, the extra fuel does. how you think that propane will help is beyond me, all you will be doing is making your engine run rich. no power will be gained.

by the way. nitrous oxide will NOT explode if exposed to a flame. it is a non flamamble gas and it says so right on my bottle. the reason nitrous works is cause in the combustion chamber the N20 decomposes into 2N+ O. that O is then free to react with the fuel which makes a bigger bang and creates the power

ok guys gimmie a break cause we just learned this in chemistry so...
Propane is C3H8 right? so there is no oxygen in the formula so it shouldnt really do anything but make the fuel mixture richer...am i right?

I think that I may have talked him out of it. Not because it's so dangerous, but because he thinks that he might have "better" ideas to gain HP. At this time, I shudder to think what those are.

I have seen conversions to 4x4 trucks with a carb because the propane enters the chamber in an gas state and the spark plug just has to fire (no compression needed) . 4x4 guys will do this conversion because with non f.i. cars if they tilt too much to one side the engine will die out. I doubt there is any benefit to fitting the propane to his gas lines. All he's doing is putting a very rich mixture to the chamber I think they would make for a great flamethrower at the exhaust!!!

???? About the questions if nitrous is flammable? A recent accident in Hawaii involved a eclipse hitting a state truck and then bursting into flames.
