Installing this on my 04 GT and it seems the shift boot sits a bit too high for it to screw on. I remove the center console and looked underneath and saw the plastic retainer that's fixed into a groove cut into the shifter, so it can't be lowered.
The cap on the boot is the problem. Do I need to cut it from the bottom or something? Has anyone else had a problem installing this and how did you fix it? Suggestions? Dyin' to get this on...

you can try taking off that ring and just having the boot hang if you dont mind, also you know you CAN take off the boot without removing the console, just pinch the boot near the windows and locks and pull forward,to put it back just pull it up and it pops into place

i think i know what you are referring to is it the gap between teh shift knob and the shifter boot from teh little trd ball shift knob?
if so what i did was i took the center panel out like he sadi above and removed teh white plastic piece and wrapped electrical tape around the shfiter to hold the boot high enuf to meet the shift knob.
hope this helps

Guess the forums went down last night? Tried posting this earlier but couldn't so here it is: Ok, here's the shifter w/everything off. That white ring is fixed solid and can't be moved. Here's the amount of room I have w/the boot on Here's the shifter sitting on top of the post, not screwed on since the post doesn't come up high enough And here's the boot inside out. Everything from just below the metal ring and up is all the plastic shiny ring that sits at the top of the boot. It's so thick it's too much it seems... Looks like I need to remove the plastic ring completely. Then how do I keep the boot up? I don't want it all saggin' down...

the white ring can be moved if you push hard enough.
just tap it lightly with a hammer and screwdriver.

I did that, but I saw the shallow groove the ring is set into right now. If I force it down beyond that what's going to keep it there? Could I glue it in place maybe? And I beat on it w/a hammer already, didn't move at all.

mine moves all around, and sometimes has to be glued to stay on...I have a GTS though, maybe it's different (doubt it)

If I understand your question correctly, just knock the plastic stop up and off or down and out of the way and replace it with a shaft collar that can be set tightly to the exact position needed. You can pick one up from a hardware store for a few bucks. Its OK if the collar is slightly larger than the shifter as all it needs to do is hold the boot up. Shaft collar: . .

We have a winner! Now THAT is the answer I was looking for. Never heard of a shaft collar. Thanks so much!
