Celica Forums General Discussion Exterior Custom exhaust question

Hey I was wondering if it is a good idea to get a good muffler and run a custom pipe from the cat to the muffler. Or should I stick w/ getting a TSRM or something similer. Also, if I do plan to do a custom does anyone know what a good brand of muffler I should look up?

well i have both the TRD exhaust and a custom veilside one. theres a good and bad side to each. the TRD is very quiet but has a great kick in mid range torque, but top end is kinda slow. the veilside has a custom 2.5 inpiping from the midpipe, it's very loud and provides a nice top end but low end has slowed a bit (not that noticable.) so i guess the only reason i have both is to switch of and o, because i like to have the veilside for autoX and the TRD for street. i'd say go for it and have a custom one welded, you should look up apex'i N1 i hear good things about that.

A Tanabe super racing medallion or Apex'i N1 are good mufflers to use. I prefer the TSRM.

i perfer running a str8 pipe and get rid of the cat .. eventhough you do hurt the enviroment a little bit more .. you do get more gains

if you are going to go custom,do it if:
1 you have the facility to mandrel bend the piping,
2 you can open the end of the piping if need be for a good fit
3 you have the ability to mig or tig weld stainless steel
4 you are going to use stainless steel piping
5 you have already figured out how loud an exhaust you can live with and already have a good sounding cannister with good flow and looks to your liking.


what ever muffler you plan on getting(when you decide this looks good to me) check the bore,from the inlet you should be able to see straight through to the other side.
the inlet size should be the same size as the piping you are using and it should continue straight through into the muffler where it would have a number of holes punhed into it.
the transition from that center inlet pipe to the open air is also important its going to be a 4" or 4.5" outlet and it should be a smooth transition with smooth welds.if you can see the back side of the pipe or jagged welds from the outlet side (big side)dont buy it.

a good custom exhaust will give you more gains than any of those axle back systems,but you have to do it right,and choose the right canister so you can get a good sound as well.

Thanks guys, but I don't want a loud ass exhaust. I just unbolted my mufflers two days ago and its awesome when I'm fucking around but its aggrivating while I'm driving to school and stuff. Do you guys think it would be just as loud if I did a custom? I want it to be in the TSRM range...

no,the custom would not be as loud as when you bolt off the exhaust.
if you are concerned about loudness,then the muffler for you when doing a custom exhaust,would be the greddy evo2 muffler.you can buy the "muffler canister" by itself.
its not a "straight through straight through" in the true sense of the word cause you cant see through,the pipe bends slightly downward.but its straight true in flow and sound real good,its the quieter and smoother flowing of most of the canisters out there.it has a lot to do with the canister size and the tip 4.5" it has really good gains too.

I had the kazuma for my first exhaust..sold that to a buddy of mine..well from the axle back.THen i just bought myself 2 bomz racing mufflers and had them put on the kazuma piping..It is loud and also pretty deep tone..i love it
