thats not good. I think you are SOL if something happens.

you should check your bolts every 3rd oil change or every 10,500 miles.

here my knowledge about the lift bolt...the lift bolt broke when the rpm all sudenlly drop back and forth...the next day i checked it...it broke...the lift bolt are under the valve cover...so you have to take the valve cover off...there a technical form in ncelica...you can check that out...you can't miss it...re-search and changes it man...also one other things you could notice is when you shift...is not smooth no more...and when you go over 6000 rpm and it doesn't give you a lift...like power...you can tell right away...

common symptoms include: (sometimes you cant notice)
intermittent lift
weak lift
no lift

also if you have an 00 - 01 and have never changed them they need to be replaced even if they arent broke. those years hve a different style bolt.

To the guy who started this thread, you must make sure that the remaining fragment of the bolt is out before you drive it. Either take it to a shop, or remove the cams, it should be in there.

The TSB for broken lift bolts explains how to do it all, but if you don't know what you're doing, then don't start something that you can't finish.

They are like 40 cents per bolt, and if you have never done this kind of work before, give yourself at least an hour or maybe longer. An impact wrench always helps too.

how long does it take to change them on average? 15 min...30 min if you're going really slow...like me grin

how much are they?
50 cents...each...

My GTS had 75k miles on it when I decided to replace the factory bolts. The factory bolts were hardly worn.

I guess I got lucky.

If you have an 00-02, replace them immediately.

They should also be replaced every 13k miles I believe.

one question for everyone..if you broke the bolts when trying to replace it, will the warranty still cover it?? i mean it's your own fault you try to replace it and screwed up..hehe..just curious because i'm changing my tomorrow..wish me luck thumbsup

you'd have to be a real monkey to break bolts...my only fear when changing them was having to drop them in the engine because those suckers are slippery...lol rofl

^^^ betta wipe it clean before start turning it..once it almost came out you can use ur bare hand and twist it out, considering ur engine have to be cold or cool way down.

i went to the dealer today to buy some but they're out..I told them i want to buy the "LIFT BOLTS" and they goes, the what bolts?? they are so dumb..then i found out later that the name for it is "FLANGE BOLTS" not LIFT..but still the dude should have know what i'm talking about, i kept on explaining that it's for Celica GTS, and he was like "what?? for celica?"" finally someone else came and explain it to him, so i ordered them, cost me $1.67 for 2 bolts, i'm picking it up on Tuesday..they also give me 17pages on instructions on how to uninstall and everything..lucky for me i suppose.. thumbsup

You couldn't drop it anywhere where you couldn't get it from. The only place that it might be hard to get out of would be the spark plug tube. You can't drop it down into any of the internals really.

if you need 13 pages to tell you how to swap an unbroken lift bolt theres an issue. lol

and you could drop it under the cams. lol but it's not likely unless you oops big time.

There are only two of them. Intake and exhaust from what I've been told.

You'd kinda have to force it down a little to lose it under the cams, but either way, just use something magnetic to pick them up. Any mechanic that I have ever met has a little magnetic rod that's useful for picking up dropped bolts, screws, etc.

Most screw drivers are magnetic also, so once you loosen it with an impact wrench or socket wrench, just pick it up that way.

And one more thing. Don't work on the engine when it's hot/warm like I (dumbass) did. I bent the oil feed pipe and couldn't get the head cover back on, but luckily I had my GF's dad shave it down and bend it back. If it weren't for him, I would have had to buy a whole new head cover for $300 bucks.

oh yeah the 17pages they gave me, i think it wasn't meant for me but for the part saleman but that dude just gave it to me. in there it include the instruction on how to change ur lift (Flange) bolts (only 2) it also got step by step showing you how to change the one that got broken too..but it's too complicated, you have to unscrew all the 20 bolts on the Intake and exhaust camshaft out and you have to take the chain out and yadda yadda yadda..basically if you're changing it try not to break it..oh yeah if you think you might drop it just put shop rag on top of the camshaft and surrounding the bolts..that way you won't drop it no where, in case you do it'll drop on the rag and not inside any valve or whatevr..

You don't have to do 90% of the stuff that they mention in that TSB if your bolts aren't broken.

They won't break as you try to take them off. If you unscrew one and see that it's broken, then it's not because it broke when you unscrewed it, but rather while the car was being driven.
