Celica Forums General Discussion General idle/fuel problem?

everytime i pump gas, ie fill her up, the car idles so low it shuts off, it seems to have somthing to do with the pressure in the tank because if i wait till the last minute to fill up it doe sit more
and after about ten minutes of running there is no more affect...i think its some pressure sensor or somthing gone wrong in the tank...but im not sure?
anyone familiar in this area? heard of this problem? anything?

don't drain the tank low, deposits can get into your injectors.

Buy injector cleaner, clean your MAF temp probe, air filter and replace your plugs *if needed*

whys it so bad? my 91 mr2 ran low tanks all the time, and NEVER had any problems similar to this...i would think a newer car would be better? if not at least the same, is it really ALL that bad?
should my car really have that bad of deposits?

running with less thatn 1/4 tank of gas is hard on the fuel pump because it uses the gas to lubricate itself, no gas, no lube... bad.

check simple things first before tearing shit out. first check for anything leaking when gas is applied.
check plugs and wires. also take a look at when you fill it up if your fuel filter seems to be shaking or vibrating oddly.

also what kinda fuel are you using? since the GTS has to use a certain fuel grade.

also try and clean your injectors and also make sure nothing is loose.

How many miles do you have on your car?
Have you ever ran out of gas?
Have you ever had the fuel system cleaned or use fuel injection cleaner after oil changes?

The fuel filter is in the gas tank, you can't see it unless you take the whole fuel pump assembly out. Just a heads up.
Also, if your car is running good until you put gas, I can garantee it's not your spark plugs.

fuel filter in a Celica will never need to be replaced...

well i just got the car...like not even a month i had it now...so I am not sure what has been done in the past, ive never run out of gas myself...and i have been pumping premium..and i have about 49k miles
nothing is leaking
i havent cleaned anything as of yet, so i guess thats what i need to do.

At 80,000 miles the fuel filter should be changed and is considered regular maintenance from Toyota. Gas is dirty and boy I wish you could've seen how dirty my fuel filter was after I took it out of my gas tank. When I bought the new fuel filter it was white and the one in my tank was brown on the inside. I split the old filter in half to see how dirty and the filter inside had so much build up it was incredible. My car has 84,000 miles I always use 91 since the day I bought the car in 2000 and I also use fuel injection cleaner after my oil changes. I don't recommend changing the fuel filter yourself, unless you have mechanic experience. This is a big job and you deal with a lot of gas. My car is getting clean gas once again like brand new. Don't go off changing your fuel filter, unless you have over 80,000 miles

Toyota doesn't even list the fuel filter as needing to be replaced up to the 120,000 mile severe service

Strange, do you have a copy of that? Hopfully you car doesn't stop running when you reach 100,000. I thought you said you never have to change the fuel filter. I'm confused!!
Some dealers state you need to change fuel filter at 60,000 and some say 80,000. In my opinion 60,000 is to soon and 80,000 sounds right. When I took my fuel filter out at 80,000 it was bad, very bad in fact. It was filled with dirt, that easily came out when I tipped the fuel filter upside down. Do you know where all that goes? To your motor. If I drove 40,000 miles more, can you imagine how dirty the gas is going into my motor.
Toyota will put 120,000 in the manual, so that they will see you pull in the dealer wondering why your car will not run.
Changing your fuel filter is routine maintenance regardless what car you drive. There is no filter in the world that last forever. Severe means, "very bad" so change before 120,000 miles.
